MEDFORD, Mass. - December 4, 2010 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell at Tufts University, 70-36, in non-league women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gym.
It took three and a half minutes for a team to get on the board in the first half as Colby-Sawyer would hold its only lead of the game, 3-1, at the 15:56 mark following a three-pointer by senior
Katelyn Stravinsky (Norwell, MA). Once first-year Liz Moynihan (Storrs, CT) connected on a three-pointer to give Tufts the advantage, they never relinquished it.
A 16-4 run that lasted over six minutes propelled the Jumbos to a 15-point lead, 23-8, with 7:44 remaining in the first. The run was highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from senior Colleen Hart (Needham, MA), and she accounted for 10 points during the timespan.
The Jumbos led by as many as 21 points in the half, but with the help of first-year
Mari Meserve's (Carver, MA) six late points, the Chargers cut the halftime deficit to 18 at 36-18. She finished the half for Colby-Sawyer with nine points off the bench, while Hart had a half-high 13 on 4 of 7 shooting. Tufts forced 12 Charger turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
Colby-Sawyer recorded the first basket of the second half, a jumper from sophomore
Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, MA), but the Jumbos answered with a three-pointer from sophomore Collier Clegg (Evanston, IL) and a bucket from Moynihan to push the lead back to 21. The Tufts advantage never dipped below 20 over the course of the final 18 minutes
The largest lead of the day for Tufts came at the 5:34 mark of the half when Clegg scored a basket inside to push it to 36 at 67-31.
Eleven Jumbos scored on the afternoon including four in double-figures. Hart led the way with 15 points and 11 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Junior Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA) added a double-double as well with 13 points, along with a game-high 12 rebounds and five assists. Moynihan (14) and Clegg (11) joined them with double-digit point totals.
Meserve continued her strong play for Colby-Sawyer in the second half and concluded the contest with a game-high 16 points on 6 of 10 shooting. She added 10 rebounds as well. Stravinsky finished with eight points and seven rebounds for the Chargers.
Tufts only shot 34.3% (23/67) from the floor, but made up for it making 17 of 21 free throw attempts. Twenty-six Colby-Sawyer turnovers helped the Jumbos receive 12 extra field-goal attempts in spite of being out-rebounded, 48-41.
With the victory, the Jumbos improve their record to 4-1 and 2-0 at home. Colby-Sawyer suffers just its second setback to fall to 4-2. Tufts will play at Emerson on Tuesday night at 5:30 pm, while the Chargers stay on the road at Castleton State on Tuesday at 7 pm.
