Late Colby-Sawyer Comeback Falls Short as the Hawks Clip Colby-Sawyer, 66-61

The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team made a late push, but came up short at Roger Williams as the Hawks won 66-61. Chargers freshman Sammi Lehr (Cohasset, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds.

Colby-Sawyer dips to 7-12, while Roger Williams improves to 8-11. Both teams are now 4-3 in conference play.

The first half was play closely and featured four ties and six lead changes. Colby-Sawyer was aided by eight points and seven rebounds from senior Terri Duffy. The Hawks, who made four of seven three point attempts were led in the first half by Elizabeth Kilzi's 10 points. The Chargers trailed 37-33 at the break, but remained close thanks to 11-12 shooting from the free throw line.

In the first 10 minutes of the second half, Roger Williams continued to build on their lead, which ballooned to as much as 15. The Chargers trailed 58-43 at the 10:20 mark and then made a run. Colby-Sawyer's defense buckled down and held the Hawks without a field goal for the remainder of the contest.

The Chargers post play brought the team back, led by Sammi Lehr. Freshman Taylor DeSanty contributed 10 of her 18 points in the second frame and tied the game with a layup with 1:10 to go.

Colby-Sawyer could not take a lead as the Hawks nailed five free throws down the stretch and forced a couple of Charger turnovers.

Duffy recorded her seventh straight double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds moving her into fifth all-time on the career rebounds list.

Alexandria Lanieri finished with 13 points and nine rebounds to lead the Hawks. Ryan Weekes contributed 10 points, six rebounds and five assists. Kilzi finished with 12 points.

The Chargers remain on the road on Wednesday, February 3 with a contest at Endicott. Tip is at 6:00 pm.
