Nichols Sweeps Colby-Sawyer in Baseball Doubleheader

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 5, 2009 – The Nichols baseball team swept both games of a doubleheader against the host Chargers on a brisk and windy Sunday afternoon. The Bison earned a 13-7 victory in the first game and followed with a dominant pitching performance in game two, winning 8-1. Colby-Sawyer had its four game win streak snapped and fell to 8-13 overall and 4-6 in conference play. Nichols improved to 9-11 overall and 4-6 in TCCC play.

Game one was all about the offense for both teams as they each reached double-digit hit totals. Nichols got on the board in the top of the first inning, but the Chargers tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. From that point, the Bison scored 12 runs over the next five innings to pull away for the game one win.

The third and fourth hitters in the Bison lineup went a combined 9-for-10 in the game. Junior Al Montalto (Wilmington, Mass.) was a perfect 5-for-5 with three RBI and a game-high four runs scored. Sophomore Austin Martin (Wakefield, R.I.) had four hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

For the Chargers, senior Chris Gaeta (Lynn, Mass.), freshman Justin Martin (Lebanon, N.H.) and sophomore Evan Leary (Concord, N.H.) each had two hits. Sophomore Brandon McFadden (Dummerston, Vt.) went 1-for-3 and knocked in two runs.

Game two featured a dazzling pitching performance by Martin, who did all of his damage in game one at the plate. He started the game by striking out the side and finished with five strikeouts. Martin gave up just two hits over the complete seven inning outing surrendering only one run.

Sophomore George Sergi (Blackstone, Mass.) led the Nichols offensive attack with two hits, two runs scored and three RBI. Sophomore Chris Nemeskal (Swampscott, Mass.) also had two hits and added two RBI and a run scored.

Colby-Sawyer hosts wraps up a four game home stand on Wednesday, April 8 with a single game against Keene State at 3:30 p.m. The Bison will host New England College on Tuesday, April 7 for a doubleheader originally scheduled for Saturday, April 4.
