Chargers Defeated by Plymouth State, 16-5

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - April 16, 2009 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team was on the wrong end of a 16-5 decision with Plymouth State on Thursday in non-conference baseball action at Panther Park. The Chargers are now 11-17 on the season.

Freshman Joe Eramo (Shirley, Mass.) had three hits and five runs batted in to lead the Panthers to the victory. He knocked in three runs with a bases-clearing triple in the third inning, sandwiched between RBI singles in the third and fifth innings. He helped the Panthers improve to 9-14 overall.

The PSU offense finished with 22 hits, the most in a game since getting 23 hits in a 16-4 win over Rivier College in April of 2002. Seniors Jay Kleponis (Reading, Mass.) and Nick Englert (North Woodstock, N.H.), freshman Mike Cappiello (Westfield, N.J.) and junior Anthony Fallacaro (Niskayuna, N.Y.) also collected three hits apiece for the Panthers. Kleponis smacked a pair of doubles and drove in two, giving him a team-high 10 two-baggers on the season.

Sophomore left-hander John Andersch (Concord, N.H.) worked seven innings and picked up the win for PSU, evening his record at 2-2 on the season. He allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits and five walks while striking out nine, second-most in his career.

Senior Tom White (Lisbon, N.H.) had three hits and two RBI to lead the Chargers. He had a run-scoring single in the first inning to help his team to an early 2-0 lead, and added an RBI double in the ninth.

Down 2-0, PSU took the lead for good with three runs in the third inning. The Panthers widened their lead with four runs in the fourth inning, two in both the fifth and sixth innings, and five more in the eighth.

Colby-Sawyer plays a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader Saturday at Curry College beginning at 11:00 a.m.
