Colby-Sawyer Falls to Keene State, 14-6
NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 13, 2009 – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team was defeated by Keene State, 14-6 on a blistery Monday afternoon. The win improves the Owls' record to 5-7 overall, while the Chargers fall to 2-7 on the season.
Colby-Sawyer jumped on the Owls quickly with a strike from junior Elaina Kennedy (Sunderland, Mass.) 18 seconds into the contest. Keene State responded two and a half minutes later with a tally from sophomore Emily Persano (Somers, Conn.). Persano scored the next goal of the match to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.
After the Owls took a 4-2 lead, Colby-Sawyer senior Allicia Murphy (No. Bennington, Vt.) cut the deficit to one with her first of three tallies of the game. However, the Owls were able to control the remaining 10 minutes of the half scoring five unanswered goals to take a 9-3 lead to the break.
In the second half, the Owls increased their lead to eight in the first 10 minutes of the stanza. Keene State held that lead for the rest of the way en route to a 14-6 victory.
Freshman Caitlyn Corace (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored three of the five goals produced by the Keene State bench. Persano finished with three scores while sophomore Jamie Albert (Southington, Conn.), junior Dene Tully (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Lauren Sawyer (Westbrook, Maine) each added two goals.
Murphy led the Chargers with three goals. Sophomore Hannah Cullen (Penacook, N.H.) registered a goal and an assist.
Sophomore Meghan Ledoux (Standish, Maine) made seven saves in the winning effort, while senior Alicia Foss (Greensboro, Vt.) made 18 saves for the Chargers.
Colby-Sawyer will travel to Endicott on Tuesday for a 4:00 pm start time. The Owls travel to Smith on Thursday with a 5:00 pm start time.
