Chargers Pull Away Late in 12-8 Win over Salve Regina
MANCHESTER, N.H. - March 21, 2009 – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team closed the game with four straight goals en route to a 12-8 win over Salve Regina, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest, Saturday afternoon. The game was played at Southern New Hampshire University. The Chargers are now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in TCCC play, while the Seahawks dip to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Senior Allicia Murphy (North Bennington, Vt.) opened the scoring with a tally three minutes into the game to give Colby-Sawyer a 1-0 lead. Salve Regina tied the game just 30 seconds later on a free position goal from freshman Sarah Livingston (Westford, Mass.). The Chargers built a comfortable cushion over the next nine minutes with three more goals, including two more from Murphy and one from freshman Lyndsay French (Ipswich, Mass.).
The Seahawks regained the momentum in the second 15 minutes of the first half outscoring the Chargers 5-1 to take a 6-5 lead at the half. Senior Nicole Fecteau (Wilbraham, Mass.) tallied three goals in that span, including a man-down goal. Freshman Lucia Graves (Norwich, Vt.) added two goals and an assist heading into the intermission. Elaina Kennedy (Sunderland, Mass.) closed the gap to one goal with a tally in the final seconds.
The second half featured alternating goals for the first 15 minutes of the stanza. Freshman Liz Allen (Holden, Mass.) knotted the score at 6-6 two minutes into the second frame. However, sophomore Nicole Viola (Scarborough, Maine) registered two out of the next three goals in the game to give the Seahawks an 8-7 lead. Murphy tied the game once again at 8-8, with her fourth goal of the game. The Chargers forced multiple turnovers in the final minutes and took advantage of their chances in front of the net.
Colby-Sawyer scored four straight goals after the game was tied. Allen recorded two more goals, while Kennedy and freshman Brittney Murphy (Woburn, Mass.) added a goal in that stretch.
Graves led the Seahawks with four points on two goals and two assists. Fecteau led the team with three goals.
The Chargers were led by a four goal, three assist performance by Allicia Murphy. Allen and Kennedy each added three goals.
Senior Alicia Foss (Greensboro, Vt.) registered 13 saves in the win for the Chargers, while junior Sarah Baker (Summit, N.J.) made six saves for the Seahawks.
Colby-Sawyer will travel to the University of New England on March 25 for a contest at 3:00 p.m. The Seahawks will host UMass-Dartmouth on Monday, March 23 at 4:00 p.m.
