Chargers Open 2009 With 21-3 Victory Over Anna Maria
PAXTON, Mass. – March 14, 2009 - Senior Allicia Murphy (North Bennington, Vt.) scored six times, while putting all eight of her shots on goal, to help propel Colby-Sawyer College to a 21-3 victory over Anna Maria College in a Division III women's lacrosse matchup at Wachusett Regional High School on Saturday afternoon. It was the season opener for the Chargers, who now improve to 1-0 with the win. The loss drops the AMCATS to 0-2 overall in the program's first season.
The AMCATS looked good out of the gate, as freshman Marie Barral (Worcester, Mass.) controlled the draw and fed freshman Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) who sprinted down field and found the back of the net just 44 seconds into the game.
The 1-0 AMC lead wouldn't last long, as CSC freshman Brigitta Park (Jericho, Vt.) tied the score with an unassisted tally just 26 seconds later. The score set off a run of 11 unanswered goals by Colby-Sawyer including three from Murphy and two each from Laura Strelis (Arlington, Mass.), Lyndsay French (Ipswich, Mass.), and Molly Prudden (Andover, Mass.).
Shebel finally broke up the Charger run with an unassisted goal at the 6:47 mark in the first period, but CSC answered right back with three more goals before the end of the half, going into the locker room with a 14-2 advantage.
The Chargers controlled the action for most of the half, outshooting the AMCATS 22-4 in the period.
It was much of the same in the second half as the Chargers scored the opening three goals of the period, getting tallies from Laura Strelis, Katherine Lee (Clinton, N.Y.) and Lyndsay French.
The AMCATS were able to respond with an unassisted score from freshman Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) but it wasn't enough. The Chargers scored the game's last four goals and went on to capture the 21-3 win.
Alicia Murphy paced the Chargers with her six-goal performance, while Laura Strelis collected five points on three goals and two assists. Lyndsay French also contributed to the win with three goals, while sophomore Deb MacEachern (Billerica, Mass.) added a goal, an assist, and a game-high six ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Alicia Foss (Greensboro, Vt.) earned the win for CSC, allowing just three goals in over 52 minutes of action in net.
Katie Schebel led the way for the AMCATS with a team-best two goals and four ground balls. Amanda Hevy also scored for AMC while sophomore Crystal Torres (Southbridge, Mass.) collected three ground balls in the loss. Freshman Katherine Chousa (Norwood, Mass.) took the loss for the AMCATS despite making a season-best 10 saves.
The Chargers will play again next Saturday when they host Salve Regina in a TCCC matchup at 1:00 pm. The AMCATS will return to action on Monday, traveling to take on Lassell at 3:30 pm.
