BRISTOL, R.I. – October 17, 2009 – The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team won a thrilling five set match at Roger Williams University, on Saturday afternoon.
The meeting was the “Dig Pink” match hosted by the Hawks in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The two teams wore pink jerseys and the crowd was saturated with the color in support of the search for a cure for the deadly disease.
The first game was very close as it went to extra points, with Colby-Sawyer getting the game winner on a kill by
Michelle Doody (Franklin, Mass.) making it 26-24. The second game went to the Hawks, 25-16, finished off on a kill by Natasha Sopchak (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) that was set up by Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.). The third game went the Chargers way as they won 25-19 on an ace by
Ashley Finethy (Alton Bay, N.H.). The fourth contest went back to the Hawks by a score of 25-22 as Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, Mass.) scored with a kill. The fifth and final game went to the visitors, 15-12, as they were able to take advantage of a few mistakes by the Hawks.
During the five games, there were 30 tie scores and 13 lead changes as both teams battled for the win. Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) led the Hawks with 16 kills, Kristina Dolan (Glenmont, N.Y.) had 14 kills of her own, and Torpey had 11 on the day. Lebowitz had 46 assists, and Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) recorded 24 defensive digs. For the visitors,
Stef Turner (Boxborough, Mass.) led the team with 14 kills, Doody and
Kristin Sawyer (Walpole, Mass.) each had 12 kills. Sawyer also had success at the service line, scoring five aces on the day.
Genny Moore (Centreville, Mass.) had 36 assists, and
Mickey LaPan (Medway, Mass.) contributed defensively with 21 digs.
The Chargers remain in first place in the TCCC and improve to 16-6 overall, and a perfect 7-0 in conference play. The Hawks suffered their first loss in the past nine games, dropping to 15-9 overall and 5-2 in TCCC action.
Next up for Colby-Sawyer is on Tuesday as they travel to Springfield, Mass. for a game against Western New England College. The Hawks are also on the road, as they head to Wenham, Mass. on Tuesday to face Gordon College.
