NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 14, 2009- The Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team lost to the University of New England, 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The win improves the Nor'easters' overall record to 9-4 and their TCCC record to 6-3. The Chargers fall to 2-12 overall and 1-8 in conference play.
The Chargers took a couple of early shots at Nor'easters keeper Jon Planer (Yarmouth, Maine), but could not get anything past him. In the 11th minute, the University of New England responded with its first scoring chance of the contest. Junior Jason Marks (East Lyme, Conn.) ripped a shot from just inside the 18-yard box but it sailed just a bit high and knocked off the crossbar.
Each team jockeyed for field position for the next twenty minutes, until Colby-Sawyer was whistled for a foul just outside of the box. Junior Elia Del Molino (Glendale, Mass.) took the kick from the left side of the net and bent it just above Chargers' keeper
Chris Feltes (Manchester, N.H.). The Nor'easters took a 1-0 lead into the break.
The game was played evenly throughout the second half until the 80th minute when UNE added an insurance goal. After no one could gain control in front of the Colby-Sawyer net, senior Dylan Saucier (Windham, Maine) made an effort to put his best foot on the ball. He ripped a shot into the right side of the net when the Colby-Sawyer keeper lost his footing. The game ended with a 2-0 advantage to UNE.
The Chargers were whistled for 19 fouls versus just eight for UNE. The Nor'easters held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Feltes had another great game in net making 10 saves for the second straight contest. Planer finished with five saves en route to the shutout.
Colby-Sawyer hits the road on Saturday, October 17 for a contest at Salve Regina at 3:30pm. The University of New England will play at Wentworth, also on Saturday, at 4:00pm.
