Rosso Leads Four Chargers in Double-Figures as Colby-Sawyer Defeats Regis, 80-54

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 10, 2009 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team opened TCCC play with a convincing 80-54 victory over Regis. Junior David Rosso (Wilmington, Vt.) led four Chargers in double-figures with 19 points. Colby-Sawyer improves its record to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the TCCC. Regis evens its record to 6-6 overall and drops to 0-1 in the TCCC.

The Chargers jumped out to a 10-1 lead after a three-pointer from junior Jon Chaloux (Barre, Vt.). Colby-Sawyer's defense would do the rest as they were able to hold the Pride without a field-goal until the 13:44 mark. Regis only scored three more baskets but made a living on the free-throw line by knocking in 13 of 22. The Chargers held the Pride to 15% shooting and won the battle of the boards 29-19 in the first 20 minutes.

Chaloux had a solid first half for the Chargers recording eight points, five rebounds and three blocks. Senior Andrew Cousins (South Portland, Maine) added nine points. Rosso scored a game-high 11 points in the first half for the Chargers.

The Pride came out of the locker room and scored two quick three-pointers to give them some momentum. Sophomore Phil Alibrandi (York, Maine) provided the offensive spark for Regis as he scored 11 points in the first several minutes of the second half. However, every time it seemed as though the Pride were going to make a run, the Chargers knocked down a big shot. Senior Duncan Szeliga (Newmarket, N.H.) who played three minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, asserted himself in the low post by drawing fouls. Szeliga connected on 8-9 free throws and scored 11 points in the second half to keep the Chargers in front. Colby-Sawyer shot 45% in the second half and shot 91% from the charity stripe.

Regis had solid play from sophomore Derrick Neal (Boston, Mass.) in the second half as he scored eight points and five rebounds. Alibrandi finished with a game-high 20 points on 6-8 shooting.

Chaloux finished with 13 points, six rebounds and five blocks. Cousins had 15 points and six rebounds. Freshman James Tobin (Brookline, N.H.) played well for the Chargers recording four points, four assists and a game-high seven rebounds.

The Chargers continue their home stand on Tuesday, January 13 with a 7:30 p.m. game against New England College.
