CHARGERS SPLIT WITH CADETS

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team hosted the Norwich University Cadets Monday afternoon after some rescheduling multiple times due to weather. With a heated playoff race in process, the Chargers would split with the Cadets during their doubleheader. 

Game 1 Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers would open this game up early, as they would produce three runs in the first inning. Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) would get things going as he hit a double to right center that scored Mike McLeer (Saco, Maine). Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, VT.) would follow and hit his double into right center in nearly the same spot to bring around O'Brien. Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) would send a single up the middle to bring home Dennis.
  • Mike McLeer would hit a single that would score Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.) in the second. Evan Dennis would hit a single in the 3rd to bring home Cooper O'Brien. Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.) would drive in McLeer right before O'Brien would bring home Roeger in the fourth to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead.
  • The Cadets would get three runs back in the fifth after going hitless through the first four innings. DeTomasis reached first on an error that would score O'Connor for the Cadets. Ohlsen singled to left field to score Sabasteanski. Carpenter flied out to right field for a sacrifice fly that would score DeTomasis.
  • Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) would single to left field which brought home Dennis to add some insurance. The Cadets would try and climb back in the sixth as they put two more runs on the board. 
  • The Cadets would score runs in the seventh and ninth to eventually tie, and take the lead, making it 11-9.
On the Mound:
  • Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) would pitch 6.1 innings and would hold the Cadets hit-less through the first four innings. He would strikeout nine while only walking one. Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) would come to relieve Rogers and would pitch 1.2 innings with one strikeout. Brady Young (Stratham, N.H.) would follow next with 0.2 innings pitched giving up one hit. Justin Powers (Peabody, Mass.) would finish the last 0.1 innings giving up zero hits. 
At the Plate: 
  • Cooper O'Brien would go perfect at the plate with a four-for-four day with a double as well as two runs batted in and scored two runs himself. Mike McLeer would have a three-for-five day with three runs scored and one batted in and a double. Evan Dennis would go two-for-three with two runs batted in and scored two runs himself. 
Game 2 Rapid Recap:
  • Game two would open with a little pitcher's duel between Will Carpenter from the Chargers and Noah Carpenter from the Cadets. The Chargers would break the 0-0 draw in the bottom of the fourth inning when Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) drove in Sean Roeger to take a 1-0 lead. McLeer would double in right center with the bases loaded and bring around everyone to score for three runs batted in.
  • The Chargers would score more in the sixth and seventh inning that started with a Dylan Watson that drove in Devin Montalvo. Cooper O'Brien would bring home McLeer next to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead. A wild pitch would bring Sean Roeger home in the seventh. A sacrifice fly hit by Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) that would bring home Staffier. 
  • The Cadets would get one run in the eighth off a pass ball. The Chargers would end the game in the bottom of the eighth inning off Dylan Watson's second home run in three games that would give the Chargers a win in an 11-1 score. 
On the Mound: 
  • Will Carpenter (Medfield, Mass.) would get the start and pitch seven scoreless innings, only allowing three hits while striking out nine and only walking three. Justin Powers would come and finish the game with 1.0 innings pitched only giving up one hit, while striking out one himself. 
At the Plate:
  • Mike McLeer would lead the way with two extra base hits with a double and a triple in a two-for-three day with three runs batted in. Dylan Watson would have a three-for-five day with four runs batted in and his second home run of the season. Noah Staffier went two-for-three with two runs scored and a walk.
Up Next:
The Chargers will return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Conneticut to take on the Blue Jays of the University of Saint Joseph.
