CHARGERS SPLIT DOUBLE HEADER WITH MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME ACADEMY

BUZZARDS BAY, MASS. - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team traveled to Massachusetts to take on Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Sunday afternoon where they would split both games. The Chargers would take game one by a score of 17-3 before dropping the second game 14-7.

Rapid Recap Game 1 (17-3):
  • The game would be held at zero, until the top of the third where the Chargers exploded for seven runs to open the scoring. Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) drove a shot to center field that would score Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.). Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) would send one the other way that would score Schmitt. Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) would then send Watson home on a single to right field. Mike McLeer (Saco, Maine) would hit the teams second home run of the season with a three run blast. Montalvo would come back up, as he would drive in Cruz to round out the seven run inning. 
  • The Chargers would come back in the fourth, driving in five more runs. The inning would kick off with a Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) single to right field that would score Schmitt. Cruz would draw a bases loaded walk to score Roeger. Montalvo would draw a walk next, bringing in O'Brien, followed by another walk drawn by Wheeler bringing in McLeer. Cruz would go on to add two more runs in the fifth off a double. 
  • Massachusetts Maritime would respond, putting up one run in the bottom half of the fifth off a Weir single that brought in Vieira. They would continue to respond in the bottom half of the sixth where Houston would draw a walk to bring in a run, and then Gorry would single to left, bringing in another run. The Chargers would add three more runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 17-3 before the game finished after the bottom half. 
On the Mound:
  • Graduate Student Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) got the win, and would toss five innings, giving up two hits and allowing one run with seven strikeouts. Sophomore Hayden Goerlich (Amherst, N.H.) would follow, giving up two runs on two runs. First Year Connor St. Gelais (Tyngsboro, Mass.) would toss 1.0 innings with one punch out. Junior Rex Hill (Andover, Vt.) and Sophomore Trevor Robichaud (Leominster, Mass.) would work together to get the final three outs for the Chargers.
At the Plate: 
  • Mike McLeer would lead the offense, powering his first home run of the season that would drive in three runs. Cruz would also drive in three runs after a two-for-three day including one extra base hit. Evan Dennis, Devin Montalvo, and Griffin Wheeler all would drive in two runs for the team as well. 
Rapid Recap Game 2 (14-7):
  • Massachusetts Maritime would strike first to open up game two driving in six runs in the first three innings to take an early lead. Velzis would drive in the games first run, and a double for Maritime's Loughren would score the first run in the third and Estrada and Logiudice would drive in two of the teams next three runs. 
  • The Chargers would try to dig out of the hole, putting up four runs in the next two innings to make it a 7-4 game. Devin Montalvo would drive in McLeer for the Chargers, while Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.) would drive in a run, followed by Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) who would drive in the next two. Mass. Maritime would respond in bottom half of the sixth, bringing this game wide open, dropping seven runs. The Chargers would try to claw back, putting up three runs in the top half of the seventh with Griffin Wheeler (Penacook, N.H.) hitting his first career home run that would bring in all three runs.
On the Mound:
  • Dylan Watson would get the start for the Chargers and threw 2.2 innings, earning three runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Will Carpenter (Medfield, Mass.) would follow, pitching 1.1 innings, with one strikeout while giving up a run. Brady Young (Stratham, N.H.) would pitch the next inning punching out one and allowing one hit. Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) would pitch 0.1 innings giving up five hitting and allowing seven runs. Matt Moreau (Hope, R.I.) would pitch the last 0.2 innings for the Chargers allowing one hit.
At the Plate:
  • Griffin Wheeler led the way for the Chargers as he was responsible for three of the Chargers seven runs as he hit his first career home run on a one-for-three day.
Up Next:
The Chargers will return to action on Tuesday, March 11th as they make up their game against Keene St. with first pitch scheduled for 6:00PM.
