CHARGERS PICK UP FIRST GNAC WINS ON THE SEASON AGAINST MONKS

RINDGE, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep Friday night against the Saint Joseph's College of Maine in what would become the Chargers first conference wins on the still young season.

Rapid Recap Game 1:
  • The Chargers would strike early in this one after the game would open up thanks to a Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) lead off walk, where he would advance to third on a hit and run from Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.). Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) would continue the inning picking up a stand up triple to bring in both Watson, and Montalvo. Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.) would hit a sacrifice fly to help bring home Dennis and put the Chargers up 3-0.
  • The Monks would get one back after Nic Frink singled to bring home teammate Luke Doughty in the top of the third. The Chargers would come back with aggression in the bottom of the third as Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) would single and bring home Dennis. Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) would steal second, and O'Brien would steal home on the throw down to make it 5-1. The Chargers would score their sixth run early off a Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) that would hit a ground rule double to bring home Staffier.
  • Dylan Brander would help the Monks make it 6-2 driving in Dawson Gundlah. It would be all Chargers for the rest of the game, after it became 6-2. Nick Johnson (Manchester, N.J.) would score on the pick off throwing error by the Monks pitcher and Watson would advance to third. O'Brien would double, helping bring home Watson in the fourth inning. Griffin Wheeler (Penacook, N.H.) would hit a sacrifice bunt that would score Staffier. Dylan Watson would hit another Chargers triple to bring home Jared Schmitt, followed by a Staffier double in the sixth to score O'Brien. The game would end in the seventh on a pass ball that would score Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.) and put into effect the ten run rule.
On the Mound:
  • Rex Hill (Andover, Vt.) would get his second official quality start for the Chargers as he would toss six innings, giving up six hits while allowing two runs while striking out four. Connor St. Gelais (Tyngsboro, Mass.) would come in to close the game as he would pitch one inning, while allowing zero hits and not allowing a single run.
At the Plate:
  • The Chargers were led by designated hitter, Nick Johnson who went three-for-four on the day while scoring one of the teams twelve runs. Devin Montalvo went two-for-four while also coming around to score for the Chargers. Cooper O'Brien went two-for-four while driving in two runs and scoring two runs himself. Noah Staffier would also go two-for-four while driving in a run and coming across to score twice. Evan Dennis went one-for-four with two runs batted in and scoring twice as well.
Rapid Recap Game 2:
  • Chargers would come back to strike first again thanks to a Dylan Watson lead off double that would see him come around to score thanks to a Cooper O'Brien single.
  • It would quickly become a pitcher's duel as no runs would be scored from the first until the fifth when the Chargers would come to score again. Watson would come and score on a passed ball to make it 2-0. The Chargers would get two more in the sixth inning thanks to a wild pitch that brought in O'Brien and Roeger scoring on an error on a Jared Schmitt fielder's choice.
  • The Monks would get three runs throughout the seventh and eighth that would make it a 4-3 game. The Chargers would add some insurance in the eighth on a Schmitt single that scored Roeger.
On the Mound:
  • The Chargers gave the start to First Year Mike Hogan (Piermont, N.H.) where he would go on to pitch six innings, while allowing two runs and striking out two. Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) would come in to relieve Hogan and finish the last three innings while not allowing a hit and allowing one run while striking out two.
At the Plate:
  • The Chargers were led in game two by O'Brien who went three-for-four on the day while driving in one run and coming in to score a run. Sean Roeger also went three-for-four while coming around to score two times in the game. Dylan Watson would go two-for-four while coming in to score twice as well.
