COAST GUARD PICKS UP ROAD VICTORY OVER THE CHARGERS

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell to the Bears of the United States Coast Guard Academy Saturday afternoon, 79-50.  
Rapid Recap: 
  • The Chargers started the game strong, taking an early lead on a three-pointer by junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.). The Coast Guard responded to the three-pointer with back-to-back buckets to take an early 4-3 lead, but senior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) made a layup to keep the Chargers on top with 7:36 left in the opening quarter. The teams would continue to trade buckets throughout the quarter with Grillone adding a three-pointer in the final minute of the quarter as the Chargers trailed the Bears 13-8.  
  • The Bears would open the second quarter with a 14-4 run, but junior Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) would make a free throw and layup to cut the Bears lead to 14 points with 4:27 left in the quarter. Grillone would hit her third three-pointer of the game to close out the second quarter with the Bears leading the Chargers 31-20.  
  • The Chargers continued to battle in the third quarter as senior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) would open up the scoring by nailing a three-pointer followed by a layup by Brewster which cut the Bears lead to six points with 8:36 left in the third quarter. The Chargers and Bears traded buckets, but back to-back free throws by Brewster and Holt's second three-pointer of the game cut the lead to two points as the Bears led 33-31 with 6:49 left in the quarter. The Bears would go on a 12-2 run to close out the quarter with Mitchell chipping in a quick four points, but the Bears would take the lead 51-39 at the end of the third quarter.  
  • Brewster would score first in the final quarter chipping in two quick layups, but the Bears would respond and go on an 17-2 to extend their lead to 23 points with 4:29 left in the final quarter of action. The Chargers would continue to battle, but were unable to cut the Bears lead and fell in the final quarter as the Bears came away with the 79-50 win.  


Inside the Numbers: 
  • Brewster led the way for the Chargers with 17 points (4-7 FG, 9-10 FT), four rebounds, and two steals while Holt tallied 10 points (4-11 FG, 2-7 3 PT), four rebounds, and two assists. Grillone added 10 points (3-8 FG, 3-6 3 PT, 1-2 FT), five rebounds, and three steals while Mitchell recorded 10 points (3-9 FG, 4-7 FT), five rebounds, and one steal.  
  • Dorothy Stotts recorded 21 points (8-14 FG, 3-6 3 PT, 2-2 FT) and six assists for the Bears while Glory Blethen added 18 points (8-15 FG, 2-4 FT), five rebounds, and six assists.  
  • The Bears shot 47% from the field and outrebounded the Chargers 45-35.  


Up Next:  
The Chargers will take a break and return to action on December 30th when they travel to Keene, N.H. to take on the Owls of Keene State in a non-conference matchup with a 2:00 PM start.
