KEENE, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell on the road Monday afternoon to the Owls of Keene State 62-56.
Rapid Recap:
- The Owls would open up the first quarter and go on a 5-2 run, but senior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) would knock down a three-pointer to tie the game up early. The teams would continue to battle and trade buckets, with junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) nailing a three-pointer with 3:26 left in the opening quarter. The Owls would make a layup in the final seconds of the quarter to take a 16-13 lead over the Chargers.
- Senior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) would score two quick layups to open up the second quarter and give the visitors a 17-16 lead. Holt would nail another three-pointer to kickstart a 10-0 run for the Chargers with sophomore Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) chipping in a layup with 5:13 left in the second quarter. The Owls continued to battle and responded to the Chargers run with a 10-0 run to take a 29-27 lead, but Holt responded with her third three-pointer of the game to keep the Chargers ahead. Brewster would extend the Chargers' lead by knocking down a pair of free throws in the final seconds as the Chargers would take a 33-31 lead heading into halftime.
- The Chargers and Owls traded buckets early in the third quarter, with Chargers taking a 37-35 lead with 7:04 left to play. The Owls would take control of the quarter going on a 10-1 run to take the lead over the Chargers, but first-year Hayden Wilkins (North Concord, Vt.) made a jumper and Holt added another three-pointer to cut the Owls lead to two points as the quarter came to a close with the Owls on top 45-43.
- The Owls would start the final quarter with a quick layup, but Wilkins would hit a three-pointer to keep the contest close. The teams would continue to trade buckets in the final quarter, but the Owls would go on a 12-1 to take a 62-51 lead with less than minute in the final quarter. Wilkins would knock down another three-pointer and Brewster added a layup of her own in the final seconds of the game, but it was not enough as the Owls would pull away and take the 62-56 win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Brewster recorded 21 points (9-13 FG, 3-7 FT), four rebounds, and one block while Holt added 15 points (5-13 FG, 4-9 3 PT, 1-1 FT), two rebounds, and six assists. Wilkins tallied eight points (3-11 FG, 2-7 3 PT), five rebounds, and four assists for the Chargers.
- Ruby Dasaro chipped in 23 points (11-20 FG, 1-1 FT), eight rebounds, and two assists for the Owls.
- The Chargers took advantage of a 15-6 fast break points margin while the Owls had 38-28 points in the paint margin.
