AMHERST, MASS. - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell on the road to the Mammoths of Amherst College Wednesday night, 67-28.
Rapid Recap:
- The Mammoths opened the quarter going on a 9-0 run with junior Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) making a layup to halt the run. The home team would respond with a quick 5-0 run, with senior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) hitting a shot from the charity stripe. The Mammoths would continue to control the opening quarter by taking a commanding 22-3 lead.
- The Mammoths would continue to control the second quarter by going on another 9-0 run, with junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) hitting a three-pointer to halt the Mammoth's run. Amherst would respond to the Charger's three-pointer and go on a 6-3 run, but Grillone would hit another three-pointer with less than a minute left in the second quarter. Sophomore Larissa Daigle (Fort Kent, Maine) hit a three-pointer to end the second quarter with the Chargers trailing 37-15.
- The Mammoths would start the third quarter by making a layup, but Brewster would respond with a made free throw followed by Mitchell hitting a free throw with 7:19 left in the quarter. The Mammoths would continue to extend their lead by going on a 14-4 run with sophomore Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) making a pair of free throws and layup to keep the Chargers on the board. Daigle would get the final shot for the Chargers in the third quarter by making a fastbreak layup, but the Mammoths led 54-28.
- The Mammoths continued to extend their lead as they went on a 13-0 run in the final quarter and held the Chargers scoreless as they came away with the 67-28 win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Mitchell led the way for the Chargers with seven points (3-13 FG, 1-4 FT), eight rebounds, and one steal while Brewster added six points (6-12 FT), five rebounds, and one block. Grillone tallied six points (2-3 FG, 2-2 3 PT) and Daigle recorded five points (2-3 FG, 1-2 3 PT), three rebounds, and two steals.
- Kori Barach recorded 16 points (5-7 FG, 3-4 3 PT, 3-3 FT), nine rebounds, and two assists for the Mammoths with Reagan Pahl adding 11 points ( 3-6 FG, 2-4 3 PT, 3-4 FT), two assists, and five steals. Anna Tranum rounded out the scoring for the Mammoths with 11 points ( 5-6 FG, 1-1 FT), two rebounds, and one assist.
- The Mammoths took advantage of 36-10 points in the paint margin over the Chargers while also having a 32-9 bench points margin.
