LYNDONVILLE, VT. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team started the 2024-25 season with a 69-65 victory over Vermont State University Lyndon on Saturday afternoon.
Rapid Recap:
- The Chargers started off the game with first-year Hayden Wilkins (North Concord, Vt.) hitting a jumper followed by sophomore Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) to give the visitors a 4-0 lead over the Hornets. The Chargers would extend their lead to 10-0 early in the first quarter with back-to-back layups by senior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) and sophomore Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.). The Hornets would get on the board with a three pointer of their own. The Chargers continued to stay on the attack as Wilkins would score a three pointer and layup to give the Chargers a 15-5 lead over the Hornets. The Hornets continued to battle as they trailed the Chargers 27-21 at the end of the first quarter.
- The Hornets would score first in the second quarter, but Brewster would respond twenty seconds later with a layup to keep the visitors in the lead. Mitchel would extend the Chargers lead with two made free throws and another layup by Brewster gave the Chargers the 36-26 lead over the Hornets late in the second quarter. The Chargers continued their offensive run as sophomore Emma Felker (Dracut, Mass.) would make the layup, giving the Chargers the 42-30 lead over the Hornets heading into the half.
- The Hornets continued to battle back in the third quarter, scoring the first point of the quarter and continued to attack the paint as they trailed the Chargers 42-37. Junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) would make a three pointer to extend the Chargers' lead to 47-39 as the Hornets responded with a layup to keep the game within six points. The Chargers and Hornets continued to battle late in the third quarter, trading points back and forth. Mitchell would chip in a layup to keep the Chargers ahead 51-44 . A late free throw by the Hornets cut the Chargers' lead as the third quarter came to a close with the Chargers ahead 54-49.
- The Chargers would score the first point of the fourth quarter as Brewster would make the free throw to keep the Chargers ahead. The Hornets responded with a layup and a three pointer as they trailed the Chargers 55-54 with nine minutes left to play in the quarter. The Chargers and Hornets continued to battle late in the fourth quarter, trading baskets back and forth as Wilkins would make a three pointer to give the Chargers a 60-56 lead. The Hornets would respond a minute later with two made free throws to cut the lead to two points with five minutes left to play. Felker would make a three pointer at the four-minute mark to extend the Chargers lead, but the Hornets made layup kept the game within give points. Senior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) would make a late three pointer to give the Chargers a 68-62 lead over the Hornets, but the Hornets answered with a made layup and free throw as they trailed the Chargers 68-65 with a minute left of regulation. Mitchell would solidify the Chargers 69-65 win with a made free throw in the final seconds of the game.

- Brewster led the Chargers with 30 points (13-19 FG, 4-7 FT) to go with 17 rebounds, three steals and two assists. Mitchell chipped in nine points (5-8 FG), six rebounds and a steal and assist. Wilkins tallied eight points (1-5 3PT, 1-4 FT), four rebounds, three steals, and three assists.
- Sage Smith led the way for the Hornets with 21 points (6-16 FG, 4073PT, 5-6 FT), nine rebounds, and two steals.
- The Chargers outrebounded the Hornets 47-31 with a 14-6 offensive rebound differential while also having a 22-4 second chance points margin.
