CHARGERS END WEEKEND ROAD TRIP 2-0

Box Score JOHNSON, VT. - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team completed their weekend road trip to Vermont and improved their record to 2-0 after defeating Vermont State Johnson 77-46 Sunday afternoon.

Rapid Recap:
  • Junior Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) started the scoring attack for the Chargers with back-to-back jump shots to take a quick 4-0 lead over the Badgers. Senior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) extended the Chargers lead with a made layup, but the Badgers responded and cut the Chargers lead to 10-7 late in the first quarter. The Chargers then went on a 10-2 run with junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) making a layup followed by a jump shot as the Chargers held a 20-8 lead after the first quarter. 
  • The Chargers continued to 20-4 run in the second quarter with Brewster making the jump shot and sophomore Emma Felker (Dracut, Mass.) nailing the three-pointer with five minutes left to play in the quarter. The Badgers continued to battle and connected with a made jump shot, but Felker responded with a pair of free throws to extend the Chargers lead late in the quarter. The Chargers continued to connect on their shots as they took a 41-14 lead over the Badgers heading into halftime. 
  • Senior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) kicked off the Chargers offensive run with a three-pointer followed by a jump shot by first-year Hayden Wilkins (North Concord, Vt.) as the Chargers went on a quick 7-0 run with 7:53 left to play in the third quarter. The Badgers responded with back-to-back buckets as they trailed the Chargers by 30 points. First-year Sierra Derby (Richford, Vt.) extended the Chargers 30-point lead with a made layup followed by a made three-pointer by first-year Tanner Drury (Bethel, Vt.) as the third quarter came to a close favoring the Chargers 64-30. 
  • The Chargers continued to dominate in the fourth quarter as Felker made a jump shot and first-year Emma Greenan (Saint Johnsbury, Vt.) followed with a layup to give the Chargers the 68-34 lead with 8:14 minutes left to play. Sophomore Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) added a jump shot followed by a made layup by junior Kaylee Manzella (Littleton, N.H.) to extend the Chargers lead to 35 points. The Badgers responded with a 6-0 run before Drury made a free throw and layup to stop the run with 1:24 left of action. The Chargers came away with a 77-46 win over the Badgers as the fourth quarter closed. 
Inside the Numbers: 
  • Mitchell recorded 12 points (5-5 FG, 2-2 FT) and one rebound while Felker chipped in 12 points (4-4 FG, 2-2 3 PT, 2-2 FT), two rebounds, and two assists. Grillone followed with nine points (4-5 FG, 1-2 FT) and one rebound while Drury added nine points (2-5 FG,1-4 3 PT,  4-6 FT). Greenan led the way for the Chargers in rebounds recording eight while also chipping in five points. 
  • Rukiya Awayle led the Badgers in points with 16 (7-10 FG, 2-4 FT) and two rebounds while Sasha Khomutetsky tallied 12 points (4-6 FG, 1-2 3 PT, 3-4 FT) and three rebounds. 
  • The Chargers shot 76.3% (29-38) from the field goal while shooting 46.2% (6-13) from beyond the arc in Sunday's win. 
Post-Game Press:
"It felt great today," said first-year Tanner Drury (Bethel, Vt.). "I feel that we worked so hard to get our teammates the ball and be as selfless as possible. Everyone worked so hard to get the win as a team! I'm so excited for the rest of the season!"

The Chargers return to action on Wednesday in their home opener as they host Thomas College of Maine with a 5:30 PM start.
