CHARGERS REMAIN UNDEFEATED IN 63-52 HOME OPENER WIN

NEW LONDON, N.H . - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team improves their season record to 3-0 after defeating Thomas College 63-52. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Terriers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead over the Chargers but back-to-back layups by senior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) and junior Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) tied the game early in the first quarter. The Chargers would extend their lead as sophomore Emma Felker (Dracut, Mass.) nailed a three pointer and sophomore Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) made a layup with four minutes left in the opening quarter. The Terriers responded with a made layup and three pointer as they trailed the Chargers 14-11 at the end of the quarter. 
  • The Terriers tied the score early in the second quarter off of a made three pointer, but Mitchell responded with an and-one, sparking a Chargers 12-3 run late in the quarter with Mitchell and Chick each nailing a three pointer and senior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) making the free throw as the Chargers led 26-17. The two teams would trade points back and forth as a made three pointer by junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) gave the Chargers a double-digit lead but the Terriers responded with a three pointer of their own to keep the score close. First-year Hayden Wilkins (North Concord, Vt.) would give the Chargers the 35-24 lead heading into the half with a buzzer beater three pointer from half court. 
  • Thomas went on a quick 5-0 run to start the third quarter, but a made three pointer by Wilkins and jumper by Mitchell would halt the Terriers run. The two teams would continue to battle in the paint as a made layup by the visitors cut the Chargers lead to five points, but Grillone responded with a made jumper to give the Chargers a 44-37 lead at the end of the third quarter. 
  • The Chargers jumped out to 13-4 run in the final quarter of action with Wilkins opening the quarter with a made three pointer with Brewster and Holt each chipping in a layup. The Terrier continued to chip away at the Chargers lead, but Holt responded with a layup to give the Chargers the 17-point lead with six minutes left to play. The Terriers were able to get points on the board but could not cut the 11-point deficit as the Chargers picked up the 63-52 win. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Mitchell led the way for the Chargers with 16 points (7-15 FG, 1-4 3 PT, 1-1 FT), 10 rebounds, and one assist while Wilkins added 10 points (3-9 FG, 3-6 3 PT, 1-2 FT), three rebounds, and four assists. Chick recorded nine points (3-6 FG, 1-1 3 PT, 2-3 FT) and four rebounds, with Holt tallying nine points (3-9 FG, 3-5 FT) four rebounds, and six assists in the Chargers win. Brewster also chipped in nine points (3-4 FT), 10 rebounds, and two assists. 
  • Deja Hamilton led the way for the Terriers with 10 points (3-8 FG, 4-9 FT) while Elena Alderman added 7 points ( 3-11 FG, 1-5 3 PT), 12 rebounds, and one assist. 
  • The Chargers capitalized on a 12-2 fast break points margin over the Terriers and took advantage of 27-18 points off turnovers margin in Wednesday's win.

"Getting the home opening win was huge for us," said junior Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.). "We all really bought into each other and played solid basketball. We're excited to take this momentum into practice tomorrow and come out strong against Wellesley on Saturday!"

The Chargers return to action on Saturday when they travel to Wellesley, Massachusetts to take on Wellesley College with a 1:00 PM start.
