Chargers Pickup GNAC Victory Over Dean College

FRANKLIN, Mass. - The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team took down Dean College during their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Thursday night by a 3-1 final score.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers took an early 5-0 led in the opening set after sophomore Isaac Davies (Hinesburg, Vt.), sophomore Austin Ponsness (Queen Creeks, Ariz.), and first year Aiden Fortier (Londonderry, N.H.) each recorded a kill apiece. The Bulldogs responded by going on a 7-1 run to take a 7-6 advantage. Senior Phu Ngo registered his first kill of the match to tie it at 7-7. Dean pulled away with the lead after a kill from Hunter Armitage to put the Bulldogs ahead 21-16. The Chargers responded by going on a 6-0 run featuring three kills from Davies to take back the lead at 22-21. The Bulldogs would win four of the final five points of the set to take the 1-0 advantage by a 25-23 final score.
  • Davies tallied a pair of kills along with a kill by Ponsness to help Colby-Sawyer take a 4-2 lead in the second set. After a kill by Tyler Martins to tie the set at 9-9, Davies notched another kill and service ace to put the Chargers up 14-11.The Bulldogs battled back to tie up the score at 16-16, but the Chargers countered with three straight including a kill by Davies to take a 19-16 lead. The teams were tied again at 22-22, but after Dean took a 24-22 lead the Chargers battled back again closing the set on a 7-3 run to win the set 29-27.
  • The Bulldogs stormed ahead 9-3 in the third set, but a pair of service aces by first year CJ Murphy (Sudbury, Mass.) sparked an 8-1 advantage to take the lead back at 12-11. Dean hung close getting to within one point at 16-15, but Colby-Sawyer put together a 7-1 stretch with two kills by Davies gave the Chargers a 23-16 lead. Colby-Sawyer finished off the set by a 25-20 advantage with another kill to Davies. 
  • The Chargers took a 5-1 lead off of two kills and two aces by Davies. Another 5-1 run by the visitors off of kills by senior Finn Husband (Elk Rapids, Mich.), Ponsness and Murphy gave the Chargers a 10-4 lead. Colby-Sawyer held a 19-12 lead before putting away the set by a 25-22 final withstanding a late 7-1 run by the Bulldogs.
Player Spotlight: 
"We worked hard and it payed off," said sophomore Isaac Davies (Hinesburg, Vt.). "We can't rest yet because we face them again Saturday."

Stats & Figures:
  • Davies led the offense with a career-best 29 kills to go along with a career-high 18 digs. Ponsness notched 13 kills and 15 digs, while Fortier added a career-high three kills and a career-best 10 digs.
  • Murphy tallied a career-mark of 43 assists to go with two kills and six digs.
