NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team closed out the 2023 campaign on Saturday falling in both Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) bouts to Regis College and Dean College by a 3-0 final. Before the second match against Dean College seniors
Phu Ngo (Everett, Mass.) and
Finn Husband (Elk Rapids, Mich.) were honored as part of the senior day festivities.
Rapid Recap (Regis) L, 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-21) :
- The Chargers trailed by a 10-5 early in the opening set before sophomore Isaac Davies (Hinesburg, Vt.) and junior Austin Ponsness (Queen Creek, Ariz.) picked up a kill and ace to cut the deficit to just three points. The Chargers continued to trail by a 14-11 margin before the Pride closed things out on a massive 11-3 run to put the first set away.
- Colby-Sawyer started out the second set up 2-0 off an ace by Davies. Regis fired back with 10 consecutive points stopped by a kill by first year Patrick Foley (Newton, Mass.). The Pride took control back leading 15-6 stopped by a pair of points back for the Chargers. Colby-Sawyer tried to start the comeback with a 5-0 run highlighted by a kill by Husband. Regis would punch back with a 9-1 closing run to put the second set away.
- The Chargers built up a 6-3 lead in the third set on two kills and a service ace by Davies. Another kill by Davies and Husband kept the Charger lead at 12-10 before getting three-straight opponent errors to lead 16-13 later in the set. Regis fought back taking a 20-19 lead which was tied back up on a kill by first year Aiden Fortier (Londonderry, N.H.). Regis closed things out by a 25-21 final.
- Davies led the offense with five kills followed by four from Husband. Fortier led the team in digs with seven, while first year CJ Murphy (Sudbury, Mass.) tallied 11 assists.
Rapid Recap (Dean) L, 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-18) :
- The Chargers held an early 4-3 lead on a kill by Davies and Ponsness. Ponsness added a 3-0 run of his own to keep the Chargers in front 7-5. The Bulldogs battled back with four-straight points eventually holding a 14-10 lead. The lead continued to grow for Dean hitting 23-14, but the Chargers put up one last fight with a 5-1 run on two kills by Davies, but the Bulldogs put the set away 25-19.
- The Bulldogs took an early 9-5 lead in the second set, which was halted by kills by Murphy and Ponsness. A Davies kill tied the game back up at 11-11, with the teams trading points until the Chargers scored three-consecutive points to take a 21-19 lead. Dean would storm back right away to tie the game at 21-21 before trading points until they finished off the game with three-straight points.
- The Chargers held an early 4-3 lead on a kill by Ngo. The Bulldogs countered with a 7-0 run stopped by a kill by Davies. Colby-Sawyer tied the game at 13-13 on two more kills by Davies and took the lead at 15-14. Dean College took control with a 11-3 closing run to end the match.
- Davies led the offense with 16 kills to go with eight digs. Ponsness registered seven kills, three aces and five digs.
