BOSTON, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse season came to end on Saturday in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) quarterfinals falling to Emmanuel College by a 14-7 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Saints quickly took a 1-0 lead as Rachel Canedy found the pack of the net just 25 seconds into the contest. Sophomore AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) made a key stop on a free position soon after to keep the deficit at one, but after a couple more minutes Ella Marschitz beat Paton for the 2-0 lead with 11:16 to play in the first quarter. The lead would grow to 3-0 before first year Cecilia Ponzini got the Chargers on the board with a free position strike. Junior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) quickly added the second goal for Colby-Sawyer finishing past the Saints to cut the lead to one goal. Senior Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) completed the early comeback picking up a free position goal to tie the game up. Paton picked up a big save leading to Marquis' second goal of the day to put the visitors up 4-3. The Saints quickly countered back with back-to-back goals to end the first quarter leading by a 5-4 margin.
- In the second quarter the teams started sloppy with sophomore Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.), Ponzini and sophomore Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.) causing a turnover each. The only two goals of the period both went to the Saints to extend the lead to 7-4 headed into the second half.
- The Saints continued its push with another goal to lead 8-4. The Chargers battled back again as Romo scored another free position goal. Emmanuel continued to add goals getting three more to jump the lead to 11-5 with 5:34 to play in the third quarter. Sophomore Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) added the sixth goal for Colby-Sawyer, but the Saints added three more goals to grab a 14-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
- Kuhlthau added the final goal of the match via free position with 12:37 to play in the game. Colby-Sawyer would get five more shots on target in the game, however would all be saved by Isabella Thomas.
Stats & Figures:
- Himes would be the star of today's game causing a career-best nine turnovers while also collecting eight grounders.
- Kuhlthau led the offense with two goals along with Marquis and Romo. Ponzini added the other goal to go along with a career-high five caused turnovers and two ground balls.
- Paton picked up the loss stopping six shots.
