Chargers Drop Match to Eastern Nazarene College

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team dropped a match to Eastern Nazarene College 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-18) during their non-conference match on Wednesday evening. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • After the Lions opened the first set by taking a 2-0 advantage, the Chargers responded by going up 3-2 thanks to a couple bad sets by the Lions and a kill from sophomore Isaac Davies (Hinesburg, Vt.). The Lions then went on a 5-0 run featuring three kills from Alejandro Garcia Fernandez to go ahead 7-3. Davies added another kill to disrupt the Lions attack, but Eastern Nazarene would take control of the set and win by a 25-11 final score. 
  • In the second set, Davies kick started the Chargers offensive after recording two kills and a service ace to put Colby-Sawyer up 3-0. After a service ace by Garcia Fernandez gave the Lions a 6-4 led, junior Austin Ponsness (Queen Creek, Ariz.) tallied his first kill of the match to make it 6-5. The Lions generated a 7-2 run to extended their advantage to 13-8. The Chargers capitalized on Lions errors to keep the score close at 17-14, but Eastern Nazarene would go on a 8-1 to win the seocnd set by a final score of 25-15. 
  • The Lions took a quick 3-0 led to start the third set thanks to a kill and service ace by Isaiah Lee. Davies notched back-to-back kills assisted by first year CJ Murphy (Sudbury, Mass.) to make it 3-2. After Eastern Nazarene went up 6-2 following a service ace from Matthew Mucha, Ponsness responded with his fourth kill of the match. Davies fought back midway through the set tallying three kills in a 5-2 run to keep the score close at 14-11. The Lions quickly responded by building seven point led which was disrupted by a kill from Murphy to make it 20-14. The Chargers continued to battle towards the end of the set, but the Lions would earn the victory after winning the thrid set by a 25-18 final score. 
Stats & Figures: 
  • Davies lead the team in kills with 13 along with three digs and a service ace. Ponsness ended the match with six kills and eight digs for the Chargers. 
  • Murphy led the passing effort with 17 assists along with eight digs and one kill. 
Up Next: 
The Chargers will host Northern Vermont University - Johnson for a double header on Saturday, February 25th with the first match starting at 1:00 PM.
