NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team dropped a pair of home matches on Saturday to Northern Vermont University - Johnson, with both ending in three sets.
Rapid Recap (Match 1) L (25-17, 31-29, 25-15):
- The Chargers trailed early by a 9-3 margin, which was stopped by a kill by junior Austin Ponsness (Queen Creek, Ariz.). The Chargers continued the run getting nine of the next 11 points on a kill by first year Maverick Thivierge (Concord, N.H.) and four more by sophomore Isaac Davies (Hinesburg, Vt.) to take a 12-11 lead. The Badgers used five-consecutive to storm back in front and later closing the set on a 6-1 run to win 25-17.
- In the second set the Chargers trailed early again seeing a 11-3 deficit. Colby-Sawyer responded with a 7-1 run including a kill from Thivierge and Davies to cut the Badger lead to 12-10. The teams traded points with NVU-Johnson holding a late 23-17 edge, but a key 7-1 run by the home team had the teams matched at 24-24. The teams would battle to a 29-29 draw before the Badgers finished off the Chargers 31-29.
- In the third set the Chargers and Badgers were knotted up at 4-4, but the visitors took charge with a 7-1 run to capture a 11-5 lead. Three kills by Davies and another by Ponsness kept the Chargers close for a while, but the Badgers would pull away winning by a 25-15 final.
- Davies led the offense in first match with 15 kills on a .125 kill percentage. Isaac added a pair of blocks and two digs. Ponsness registered 10 kills, eight digs and a pair of blocks.
Rapid Recap (Match 2) L (25-23, 25-20, 25-20):
- The Chargers and Badgers were even at 9-9, before the visitors took their first lead at 11-9. Back-to-back kills by Davies tied the game up, but another four-point spurt put NVU-Johnson in front. The Chargers came back to tie the game at 21-21 before jumping ahead on a service ace by Thivierge, but the Badgers countered with four of the last five points to hold on for the set win.
- The Badgers and Chargers were once again knotted up at 6-6 with the visitors scoring three-straight to lead 9-6. Colby-Sawyer bounced back with a 6-2 advantage led by two kills by Davies to cut the deficit to tie the set up 13-13. The visitors held on for the 25-20 lead closing the match with a key 12-7 run.
- The Badgers stormed ahead 9-2 in the third set eventually taking a 13-4 lead. Colby-Sawyer countered with four-straight off of a kill by Davies. The Chargers tried to stay in the set wih one final 5-2 run, but the Badgers held on by a 25-20 final.
- Ponsness led the attack in the second match with 10 kills on a .261 kill percentage. Davies added 13 kills, and eight digs in the loss.
