Chargers Swept in GNAC Tri-Match

BOSTON, Mass. - The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team dropped a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match to Lasell University and Emmanuel College on Saturday at Emmanuel College.

Rapid Recap (Lasell University) L (25-18, 25-8, 25-14): 
  • The teams were knotted up at 4-4 before a service ace by senior Phu Ngo (Everett, Mass.) put the Chargers on top. The teams continued to trade points with the Lasers holding a 13-9 lead. Lasell would continue to be successful going on a 6-1 run to grow the lead to19-12. A kill by first year Maverick Thivierge (Concord, N.H.) and another by first year CJ Murphy (Sudbury, Mass.) tried to keep the Chargers in it but the Lasers held on by  a 25-18 final.
  • Sophomore Isaac Davies (Hinesburg, Vt.) kicked off the second set with a kill, but the Lasers would respond with a 11-1 advantage. Junior Austin Ponsness (Queen Creek, Ariz.) notched a kill to stop the run, but the Lasers continued to succeed with a 7-0 run. Thivierge added another kill but Lasell would win 25-8.
  • In the final set of the first match the Lasers jumped ahead 9-4 stopped by a third kill by Thivierge. The Chargers battled back with a service ace by Murphy to cut the deficit to just 11-8, but five-straight points kept the Lasers in front. Kills from Ngo and Ponsness but Lasell doubled up the Chargers by a 24-12 margin. A kill by Davies and an ace by Ponsness gave the Chargers two more points, but the Lasers held on for the win.
  • Davies led the offense in match one with five kills, while Thivierge added four kills. Murphy led the passing attack with 11 assists while Ngo led the defense with five digs.
Rapid Recap (Emmanuel College) L (25-15, 25-18, 25-13): 
  • The Chargers took a 3-1 lead behind a kill and an ace from Davies. The Saints responded with seven-consecutive points to jump in front. Emmanuel College continued to lead jumping the advantage to 16-7 stopped by another kill by Davies. Davies added another kill followed by an ace by Thivierge to cut the deficit to seven, but the Saints held on for a 25-15 win.
  • An ace by Davies put the Chargers up 2-1, but the Saints knotted the set at 4-4 and eventually took a 6-4 advantage. The Chargers tried to battle back with kills by Ponsness and Davies, but the Saints doubled up the Chargers 14-7. Ngo, Davies and Ponsness helped cut the deficit to just four points, but the home team would hold on to a 25-18 win.
  • The Chargers trailed early by a 6-5 margin in the third set, but a 5-3 run by Colby-Sawyer put the visitors on top 10-9. Emmanuel punched back with a 9-0 spurt stopped by a kill by Davies. The Saints closed the match on a 6-1 run to end the tri-match.
  • Davies led the offense again in the second match with 12 kills to go along with a team-best nine digs. Ponsness tallied eight kills and four digs, while Murphy added 19 assists and a pair of service aces.
