Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Chargers Fall in Saturday Tri-Match

Written by: Bella Silva

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team faltered during today's tri-match, featuring Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The Chargers' loss to both teams shifts their overall record to 5-8.

Rapid Recap (WPI) L (25-14, 25-19, 25-22):
  • The Goats took an early 3-0 advantage in their first set, but the Chargers returned with a kill from senior captain Olivia Werner (Williston, VT.) to make the score 3-1. The Chargers continued to fight throughout the first set, holding WPI to only a lead of 4 for most of it. With the help of sophomore Ally Majenski (Marshfield, MA.) and Werner, the Chargers fought hard, utilizing their kills to hold the Goats steady. Despite this, they fell short 11 points.
  • In the second set, the Chargers were hungry to return. They held a tight lead in the initial minutes. Junior Katie Molberg (Naples, FL) and sophomore Audra Fontes (Fresno, CA) aided in the Chargers with a kill and an ace, respectively. Another kill from senior captain Ameesah Cotten (Newburgh, NY) pushed the Chargers forth in their fight for the lead. The score remained tight, and the Goats and the Chargers battled it out until the end. Despite some strong kills by Sophomore Makaila Blinne (Palm Bay, FL) and again by Cotten, the Chargers' strength could not match the Goats'.
  • In the third set the Chargers took a 21-14 advantage before WPI countered on a 11-1 run to end the match for Colby-Sawyer.
Rapid Recap (MIT) L (25-9, 25-13, 25-9):
  • The Chargers came out strong in the first set with a kill from sophomore Brooke Patnode (Weare, NH) and an ace from Fontes. Gaining momentum, the Chargers strike again with the help of Werner, earning two consecutive kills. Despite their hustling efforts, Chargers fell to the Engineers in the first set.
  • In the second set, the Chargers lit up the scoreboard with a kill by Cotten and another by senior captain Mia Harmon (Concord, NH). Harmon fires another kill to hold the Engineers at bay. Working hard, the Chargers try to keep up with the Engineers as Cotten fires another kill to get Colby-Sawyer within 19-12. MIT carried their lead until the end of the set winning by a 25-13.
  • The Chargers and their opponent continued the duel into the 3rd set. MIT struck first on the scoreboard, but the Chargers contested. Cotton, Patnode, and Majenski brought a kill, an ace, and another kill to the battle. Despite their hard work, MIT won in the end with a 25-9 score.
