HENNIKER, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team battled back from being down two sets, but eventually fell in five sets to New England College by a 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 22-25, 16-14).
Rapid Recap:
- The Pilgrims jumped up 8-2 early. The lead continued to grow after a 5-0 run to give New England College a 16-7 advantage. The Chargers countered in a big way going on a 10-1 run sparked by three kills by senior Olivia Werner (Williston, Vt.) to tie the game up at 17-17. The Pilgrims responded with seven of eight points to lead 24-18. The Chargers tried mightily scoring five-straight, but New England College held on for a 25-23 win.
- The second set started with the Chargers taking a 6-2 lead off a pair of kills and a block by Werner. Colby-Sawyer continued to hold the lead before the Pilgrims countered with a 7-0 run to take a 12-10 lead. A kill by sophomore Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.) knotted the game back up at 20-20, but New England College stood tall to hold for a 25-22 set win.
- Trailing by two sets the Chargers surrendered the first eight points of the third set, before storming back with five of six points with two more kills for Werner. Back-to-back kills by sophomore Makaila Blinne (Palm Bay, Fla.) tied the game up at 12-12. Werner tied the game again at 22 with another kill to spark the Chargers closing out the set on a 4-1 advantage ended by senior Mia Harmon (Concord, N.H.).
- With the Chargers holding the momentum the visitors jumped ahead 6-0 with three service aces from Blinne. NEC battled back drawing the game even at 10-10 before Colby-Sawyer got another lead off a kill and an ace from Mollberg. The Chargers held the lead till the end with senior Ameesah Cotten (Newburgh, N.Y.) ending the set with back-to-back points.
- In the fifth set Colby-Sawyer held a slight 12-10 lead after a Harmon kill. The Pilgrims countered with a 4-1 run, before the Chargers tied the game at 14-14 after a Blinne kill. NEC finished off the Chargers with back-to-back points to end the match.
Stats & Figures:
- Sophomore Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.) finished the match with a career-high 49 assists with 12 digs and a kill to lead the Chargers passing attack. Werner led the offense with 20 kills on a .220% kill percentage, while Harmon, Mollberg and Cotten each added 10 kills a piece. Blinne also had a big match with nine kills, 12 digs and a career-best five service aces.
- On the defensive side sophomore libero Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.) led the way with 17 digs, while Cotten led the team in blocks with one solo and two assisted rejections.

The Chargers will head to Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday to take part in the MIT Invitational with matches at 2 and 4 PM.
