WALTHAM, Mass. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball picked up their first victory of 2022 in thrilling 3-2 (15-25, 25-16, 16-25, 25-18, 15-6) match against Worcester State University. With the win head coach
David Starin picked up his first collegiate win.
Rapid Recap:
- The first set started with the Chargers leading 7-6, before the Lancers countered with five-straight points to take the lead. Colby-Sawyer countered with a 5-1 strike to tie the game at 14-14. Worcester State University took control from that point on with a 11-1 run to close the first set.
- The Chargers started the second set trailing 6-4 before going on a 8-0 run sparked by a pair of kills by sophomore Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.). Colby-Sawyer continued the momentum with another 8-0 run en route to a 25-16 set two win.
- The Chargers led 11-10 in the third set, before the first major run came from the Lancers who scored 10 straight points to lead 20-11. A kill from Majenski got the Chargers within 23-16, but Worcester State held on winning 25-16.
- In the fourth set the Chargers trailed 13-11 before rallying for a 10-0 run sparked by a pair of aces by senior Kaytlin Young (Goffstown, N.H.). Two more kills from Majenski sealed the fourth set win as the Chargers won 25-18.
- The fifth set started with a flurry by the Chargers as Young tallied three more service aces to get Colby-Sawyer a 5-3. The Chargers continued to dominate the fifth set with another 6-0 run that gave the visitors a 11-3 advantage en route to a 15-6.
Coaches Corner:
"It was an exciting match with major momentum swings", said head coach
David Starin. "We were able to sustain runs of service points at critical points of the match and able to secure the win."
Player Spotlight:
"We had great communication on the court and most importantly we had fun", said senior
Kaytlin Young (Goffstown, N.H.). "I am proud of the way we played and excited we got our first win of the season."
Stats & Figures:
- Young finished as the teams top performer with a career-high seven service aces to go along with three digs. Majenski ended the day as the teams leader in kills with 12 to go along with four digs. Senior Ameesah Cotten (Newburgh, N.Y.) added 10 kills and four blocks.
- Sophomore Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.) led the passing with 35 assists to go along with 11 digs.
