NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team secured their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match during Saturday's tri-match featuring Dean College and Fisher College. The Chargers victory over the Bulldogs improves their conference record to 1-0 but overall record falls to 5-6 after taking a loss from the Falcons.
Rapid Recap (Dean College) W (25-17, 26-28, 25-14, 25-13):
- The Chargers took an early 5-0 advantage in their first set and were able to further their led by 11 points with the score at 18-7. Senior captain Olivia Werner (Williston, VT.) made three consecutive kills to put the Chargers up 1-0 in the match.
- In the second set, the Bulldogs capitalized on Charger errors to give them a 15-10 led. The Chargers closed the gap thanks to sophomore Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.) who made a couple kills to help tie it up 18-18. The Bulldogs managed to pull away with the set 28-26 to make it 1-1 going into the third set.
- The third set was back-and-forth until the Chargers took a large 20-11 led. Colby-Sawyer would go on to win the third set 25-14.
- In the fourth set, senior captain Ameesah Cotten ( ) and sophomore Katie Mollberg ( ) each recorded two kills to help give the Chargers the early advantage. Werner's seven kills in the set would help secure the final set 25-13 and earn the Chargers their first GNAC win of the season.
- Werner led the team with an impressive 20 kills. Harmon made three blocks and Audra Fontes (Frenso, Calif.) and Brooke Patnode ( ) each recorded nine digs in the match.
Rapid Recap (Fisher College) L (25-19, 25-23, 25-18):
- The Falcons came out strong in the first set with two service aces by Paola Velazquez to give them a 6-1 advantage. The Chargers fought back by rattling off nine consecutive points with senior captain Mia Harmon ( ) and Majenski each recording two kills as well as a service ace by Mollberg to put the Chargers up 11-7. The Falcons responded by stringing together nine points of their own and would win the first set 25-19.
- In the second set, the Chargers battled with the Falcons keeping the score close up until the very end of the set. Werner and Harmon were able to help narrow the Falcons led from 22-17 to 22-21 but the Falcons took the second set to go up 2-0 in the match.
- In the third set, Majenski made three kills in a row to tie the set at 14-14. The Falcons started to extend their led and would win the final set of the match 25-18.
- Majenski led the team with 11 kills followed by Harmon with seven kills and Werner with six kills. Kaytlin Young (Goffstown, N.H.) had two serivce aces and Fontes made nine digs in the match.
Player Spotlight:
"For our first GNAC game against Dean College this was a great game," said captain Werner. "I think we were all surprised at the level of play we saw from them. We had highs and lows but we worked as a team to control the controllable. Our second non-conference match against Fisher College was a 'good loss' as we fought back in each set and we just need to start that fight right out the gates which is what we will be working on in practice settings."
