Chargers Sweep Saturday Tri-Match

NEW LONDON, N.H.  - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team picked up back-to-back wins on Saturday defeating both Salem State University and Northern Vermont University - Johnson by a 3-0 final. 

Rapid Recap (Salem State University) W (25-12, 25-18, 25-22):
  • The Chargers led 11-9 in the first set before scoring 10-consecutive points sparked by four kills by senior Mia Harmon (Concord, N.H.). Colby-Sawyer finished the first set off with a win after back-to-back service aces from sophomore Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.). 
  • In the second set, the Chargers continued to roll leading 6-5 before rattling off five-straight points. The teams traded points with three kills by sophomore Makaila Blinne (Palm Bay, Fla.) helping put together another Charger win this time by a 25-18 margin. 
  • The Vikings took the lead early in the third set jumping ahead 4-0 before Colby-Sawyer caught back up at 8-8. Another kill by Blinne gave the Chargers a 9-8 lead before Salem State took the lead once again using a 10-5 run to get back in front by three points. Colby-Sawyer rallied late score five of the last six to give the home team a 3-0 match win. 
  • Blinne finished with a team-high 14 kills to lead the Chargers, while Harmon finished next with 11 kills and a pair of solo blocks. Patnode finished the match with 30 assists, while sophomore Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.) led the defense with 12 digs. 
Player Spotlight:

"I just had a great connection with Brooke and the rest of the team today", said sophomore Makaila Blinne (Palm Bay, Fla.). "It feels really nice to pickup the win. We had a couple of bad stretches recently so finally picking up a big win today felt big."

Rapid Recap (Northern Vermont University - Johnson) W (25-16, 25-23, 25-21): 
  • The Chargers jumped back into play with a 7-0 run starred by four aces by senior Kaytlin Young (Goffstown, N.H.). Another three aces by sophomore Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.) pushed the game to 14-6 en route to a 25-16 set one win. 
  • In the second set Colby-Sawyer again controlled leading 5-1 early. The Badgers made a run to cut the lead to 13-10, but a 7-1 counter led the another big Chargers win. 
  • Northern Vermont University - Johnson led 12-5 in the third set before a 5-1 Chargers run gave the momentum back to the home team. The Badgers led 21-15 before a closing 10-0 run highlighted by three kills by Harmon finished the day for Colby-Sawyer with two wins.
  • Harmon had eight kills to lead the attack for Colby-Sawyer with a pair of blocks and digs. Mollberg finished next with three kills and three aces, while Young had another big serving game with five aces.
Player Spotlight:

"It was a long day so to close it out on a 10-0 run was really good to keep our energy high", said senior Mia Harmon (Concord, N.H.). "I think we are going to take today's momentum and roll with it. We haven't had any conference games yet and having these wins will hopefully boost our momentum as we head into conference play to eventually make it to the playoffs."
