BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team kicked off the 2022 season with a 14-3 loss at the hands Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneers.
Rapid Recap:
- The first inning went by without any scoring as senior Kaelen Close (Beverly, Mass.) got the start with a clean inning. The second inning brought some controversy as a liner that was called a catch on the field, which turned into a double-play was called back leaving first year Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) in an early jam with runners on first and second instead of no runners and two outs. An error followed leading to the first run of the game from the Buccaneers en route to an eight run inning for the home team.
- The Chargers would get on the board in the fourth inning as back-to-back singles from junior Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.) and junior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) got the bats rolling. Turpel would come around and score the first run of the season on a fielder's choice from first year Bailey Camacho (Attleboro, Mass.). Sophomore Jack Matarese (Ashland, Mass.) continued the offense with a single down the right field line to bring home another run for the Chargers. The Buccaneers countered with a run of there own in the bottom half of the fourth giving Mass. Maritime a 9-2 lead heading into the fifth.
- Colby-Sawyer added another run in the sixth inning as junior Ben Brennan (Marblehead, Mass.) grounded out with junior Cooper O'Brien coming around to score off a walk. The Buccaneers kept the lead at seven answering with another run in the bottom of the sixth. Mass. Maritime added another run in the seventh, followed by three more runs in the ninth to pick up the impressive victory.
Notes & Notables:
- The offense was led by O'Brien who went 2-3 with a double, run scored and a walk. Choiniere added the other extra base hit a 2-4 performance with a double in the first inning. Matarese went 1-2 with an RBI, while Turpel added a 1-3 day, while scoring the first run of the season for the Chargers.
- On the mound for the Chargers Close started the day with a quick inning of work only allowing a walk in 15 pitches. Sophomore Matt Miller (Dracut, Mass.) had an impressive debut in the third inning, throwing 11 pitches and striking out one in a clean inning of work. Sophomore Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) was the only Charger with two innings of work striking out three while allowing three hits and an earned run.
- Mullen earns the loss in his collegiate debut allowing eight runs with only three earned on three hits, two walks and a strikeout.
- The Chargers struggled defensively ending the day with a total of five errors in the field compared to zero from the home team. Both teams stole a single base with first year Griffin Wheeler (Penacook, N.H.) swiping the first base of the year.

The Colby-Sawyer baseball team heads south to Florida to take place in the Russmatt Central Florida Invitational. The Chargers will face off with Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in a double header on March 12th to open their 11 game schedule in Florida.
