DAVENPORT, Fla. – Day one of the Central Florida RussMatt Invitational started with a doubleheader against the Trailblazers of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in which the Chargers collected their first season win taking the second game 10-3.
GAME 1:
- Junior captain Tommy Sasso (Grafton, Mass.) had a good eye starting his first at bat with a walk to put a runner on base for the Chargers. A single from junior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) placed Sasso at third base in time for first-year Bailey Camacho (Attleboro, Mass.) to double to centerfield to put the chargers up 2-0. With Camacho standing on second base, first-year Jesse MacGlashing (Pittsfield, N.H.) traded places with a double of his own and an RBI for a 3-0 Charger lead. The Trailblazers managed to get one on the board from a walk with bases loaded.
- After another Trailblazer run in the second, the top of the third showed a 3-2 score until junior captain Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.) scored off a fielder's choice to give Camacho another RBI. In the fourth, the Trailblazers knotted the score at four after a throwing error in the diamond. A double from Mack scored one more putting the Trailblazers up by one going into the fifth. The next three innings remained quiet on both sides as neither team collected another hit. The Chargers fell 5-4 in the first 7-inning game of the doubleheader.
GAME 2:
- The Charger's bats came alive in the second game, collecting 12 total hits 10 runs. The first Colby-Sawyer hit came in the bottom of the third with Sasso's first triple of the night which would then score first-year Griffin Wheeler (Penacook, N.H.) who reached on an error. A fielder's choice and another fielding error from the Trailblazers scored Sasso and put Turpel on first who would then advance to third on a single from Choiniere. With two runners on, junior Cooper O'Brien put the ball in play reaching first base on an error and scoring both Turpel and Choiniere to set the score 4-0 Chargers.
- The top of the fourth consisted of a strike out from first-year pitcher Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) and a good ole fashion 4-6-3 double-play to bring the bats out. Despite Sasso's second triple of the night, the bottom of the fourth inning was silent with two Charger strike outs. Starting the fifth, two Trailblazers scored off a double to cut the Charger lead in half. Then, Choiniere started the passing of the bats with a double. O'Brien singled to right field to bring the first year in and force a pitching change. First-year Ben Mensch handled the pitching change just fine, with a SAC fly to centerfield to bring in Choiniere and advance O'Brien to second. A double from sophomore Jack Matarese (Ashland, Mass.) scored O'Brien making the score 6-2. The Chargers then brought in two more runs to extend their lead to six going into the sixth.
- First-year reliever Kenneth Spratt shut the Trailblazers down allowing only one hit in the inning. Looking to score more, Turpel tripled to right center with one out to eventually score off a single from Choiniere. The last Charger run would then come from Camacho after reaching on a fielder's choice. The Chargers collected their first win of the season with a 10-3 final.
