Cummings' Huge First Half and Boone's Big Second Half Pushes Chargers Past Amherst College 81-69

Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team picked up a massive home win on Thursday night defeating the Amherst College Mammoths by a 81-69 final. Sophomore Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, N.H.) tallied 19 points in the first half, while senior Omar Boone (Colorado City, Texas) put up 18 total points including 11 points in the second half to lead the Chargers over the Mammoths.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Mammoths opened the scoring in the first half after Chris Hammond finished a layup. Sophomore Mike Joanou (Burbank, Calif.) made a driving layup to get the Chargers first two points of the game. Early back-to-back three pointers from Cummings gave Colby-Sawyer an 8-6 advantage, Amherst tied it back up with a layup from Will Scherer, but the Chargers continued to push their attack with senior Conor Kelly (Charlestown, Mass.) and Cummings each making a bucket to make it 13-11. The Mammoths took the lead back by a 28-25 final, but a responding 13-2 run starred by five points from Boone put the home team up 38-30. The lead grew to 12 points as senior Scott Lampron (Concord, N.H.) hit a stare-down triple. Amherst tried to respond, but another jumper by Lampron kept the lead at 48-38 headed into the break.
  • The Mammoths started quickly with four-straight points to cut the lead to six, but a 7-0 counter by the Chargers finished by a senior Terrence Harvey Jr. (Atlanta, Ga.) three-pointer got the lead back to 13. A 6-0 advantage by Amherst cut the lead to 59-52 with 12:32 to play, but Colby-Sawyer continued to punch back after five-straight points from Boone kept the lead at a comfortable 12 points. The teams continued to trade buckets until the 5:11 mark, where Harvey Jr. made a layup and then followed with the play of the day, stripping Dan Schlakman and then lobbing it up to Boone for a ferocious alley-oop dunk. The Mammoths countered with six-straight points, but six clutch free throws from the home team kept the Chargers on top for the 81-69 victory.
Player Spotlight:
"We were running through our plays and pushing it in transition", said senior Omar Boone (Colorado City, Texas). "They had a lot of bigs so they were a little slower than us, so we started running a little faster. Kevin was hitting too so once he started hitting, he got us started and everybody off the bench started turning it up too. Everybody in the crowd brought it too, it was all Colby-Sawyer in here! We are taking this big time because this is a big time team, so we are going to take this win and push it to the next one. We are going to try and get that next win."
