Chargers Fall to Saint Joseph's College of Maine

STANDISH, Maine - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team came up short after taking the first set on Wednesday night falling to Saint Joseph's College of Maine by a 3-1 (16-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-23) final. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Chargers jumped ahead 7-1 in the first set, behind two assists and a kill by sophomore Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.). The Monks countered later in the set with four-straight points to trim the deficit to 16-12, but a late 6-0 advantage starred by sophomore Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.) helped pull out the first set win for the Chargers. 
  • In the second set the teams traded points before another Mollberg kill ended a 3-0 spurt by the Chargers to earn them a 8-5 advantage. A 8-2 counter strike by the Monks gave the home team the lead back at 13-10. Saint Joseph's would close the set on a 7-2 run to knot the game at a set apiece. 
  • Both teams were tied at 7-7 in the third set before the Monks gained an early advantage on a 5-1 swing. A late run by the Chargers got the game back to 19-18, but another clutch 6-2 run by the home team finished the Chargers off 25-20. 
  • In the final set the Monks led early 10-5, before six-straight points from the Chargers finished off by a senior Kaytlin Young (Goffstown, N.H.) kill. Saint Joseph's College countered with a 9-2 run to push the advantage to 19-13. A kill and an ace from Mollberg tied the game back at 22-22, but the Monks would end the match with three of four points.
Stats & Figures: 
  • Mollberg led the offense with a career-best 11 kills on a .476 kill percentage. Katie added eight digs defensively.
  • Senior Ameesah Cotten (Newburgh, N.Y.) added a monster game with 10 kills on a .600 kill percentage with a season-high five solo blocks.
  • Sophomore Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.) led the defensive effort with 19 digs, while Patnode added 13 more.
  • Patnode led the passing again with 36 assists.
Up Next: 
The Chargers will head to Boston on Saturday for a tri-match against Anna Maria College and Simmons University.
