Chargers Tripped Up by Johnson & Wales University 3-1

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team came up short on Thursday night falling to Johnson & Wales University by a 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-9, 25-16). 

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Chargers jumped ahead 4-1 in the first set, before the Wildcats countered to tie the game at 7-7. An 8-2 run by the home team put Colby-Sawyer back in front spearheaded by a pair of kills by sophomore Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.).  Johnson & Wales got back into the game getting to within 21-20, but a Majenski kill followed by a service ace by senior Kaytlin Young (Goffstown, N.H.) helped the Charger hold on for a 25-23 win.
  • Both teams battled in the second set with the score at 9-8 in favor of the Wildcats in the early going. The Wildcats finally pulled ahead getting nine out of 10 points to lead 17-9. Senior Olivia Werner (Williston, Vt.) picked up a kill to stop the run momentarily, but Johnson & Wales' offense was too strong winning 25-15. 
  • The third set was all Wildcats in the beginning pulling ahead 14-5. Senior Ameesah Cotten (Newburgh, N.Y.) tried to get the offense going, but Johnson & Wales used a counter 9-0 run to win the third set 25-9.
  • Sophomore Makaila Blinne (Palm Bay, Fla.) started off the fourth set for Colby-Sawyer with her first kill of the day, but the teams would battle to an early 7-7 stalemate. The visitors gained control leading 16-9, before another 7-3 run gave the Wildcats a 23-12 advantage. Colby-Sawyer tried to hold on with a kill coming from sophomore Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.), but the Wildcats were too strong winning by a 25-16 final.

Stats & Figures: 
  • Majenski led the offense for Colby-Sawyer with nine kills and a pair of digs. Werner and Mollberg followed with four kills a piece. 
  • Sophomore Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.) led the passing attack with 21 assists as well as six digs.
  • Sophomore Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.) led the defensive effort with 14 digs. 
Up Next: 
The Chargers will travel to Standish, Maine for a contest with the Saint Joseph's College of Maine Monks on October 19th with a 6 PM start time.
