Daly’s Overtime Goal Propels Field Hockey to First Win Over Keene State in School History, 5-4

KEENE, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer College field hockey team beat Keene State College for the first time in school history after an overtime goal by junior Aoife Daly (Harwich, Mass.) sealed the deal for the Chargers.

Colby-Sawyer battled back from a three-goal first quarter deficit. The comeback was highlighted with goals from Daly, graduate student Julia Lanctot (Sandown, N.H), and freshman Emma Webster (Campton, N.H.). Junior goalkeeper Lauren Wilkinson (Lynn, Mass.) had a career-high 12 saves in the victory.

The Summary
  • The first quarter started and it was all Keene State. The Owls broke open the scoring in the fourth minute of play. Three minutes later they found the back of the net again for an early two goal advantage. Two minutes after the second goal, the third goal was scored for the Owls, giving them a three-goal lead less than 10 minutes into the game. Sophomore Aleah Murph (Portland, Maine) had the only shot on goal for the Chargers in the first quarter.
  • Things started to turn around for the Chargers in the second quarter. Lanctot scored her first goal of the season on a pass from junior Jordon Pollard (Newbury, N.H.) to cut into the Owl lead. Daly had a shot on goal at the tail end of the second period that was saved by the Keene State goalkeeper.
  • Daly got right back to work at the start of the third quarter, scoring her fifth goal of the season two minutes into the stanza. The Keene lead was now only one. In the final three minutes of the third quarter, Webster beat the Keene goalkeeper for her first goal of the year. The game was now tied, but not for long. About twenty seconds later, Keene State scored for the first time in a long time to give the Owls the lead heading into the final quarter.
  • In the fourth quarter, junior Bella Silva (Danvers, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season to tie the game up with over 10 minutes left to play. Lanctot had the assist on the goal. Wilkinson had three saves in the quarter to preserve the tie for the Chargers. With under a minute to play, Daly had a shot fire wide, sending the game into overtime. The overtime period was all Daly. She had two shots early in the extra quarter, but could not find the back of the net. Finally, in the 67th minute, Daly fired one towards the net and beat the Keene State goalkeeper for her sixth goal of the season and the third win in a row for Colby-Sawyer.

  • Three different Chargers scored their first goal of the season.
  • Wilkinson had a total of 12 saves, doubling the Owls saves at only six.
