Women's Volleyball Overpowers the Vikings in 3-0 Victory

New London, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team took down the Vikings of Salem State University in three straight sets on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 in the Dan and Kathleen Hogan Sports Center. 
 
The Basics:
 
Score: Colby-Sawyer 3, Salem State University 0 (25-16| 25-17 | 25-15)
Records: Colby-Sawyer (4-7, 0-1 GNAC), Salem State University  (1-8)

Rapid Recap: 
  • Two back-to-back kills by freshman Shaelyn Thornton (Scarborough, ME.) started out the first set of the match. A three-point run consisting of a kill by junior Ameesah Cotten (Newburgh, N.Y.), a serving ace by freshman Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.) and another kill, this time by junior Olivia Werner (Williston, VT) gave the Chargers an 8-3 lead in which they kept for the remaining of the set. 13 total kills by the Chargers were recorded for set 1. The score ended 25-16, Colby-Sawyer. 
  • Like the first set, two back-to back kills started the second, coming from both Thornton and junior Mia Harmon (Concord, N.H.), assisted by senior captain Anna Allen (Los Angeles, CA). The Vikings answered back with a kill of their own to get themselves on the scoreboard. Both teams went point-for-point for the remaining of the set with the Chargers maintaining the lead. Colby-Sawyer took the closest set of the night, 25-17. 
  • The third set began with the score even as both teams took turns earning kills. A three-point run sparked by an overpowering attack from junior Ava LaValle (Peabody, Mass.) separated the Chargers from the Vikings putting Colby-Sawyer ahead. Another 13 total kills were earned during the third set which contributed to their 25-15 victory, giving the Chargers the 3-0 win for the match.
 
Notes and Notables:  
  • Thornton recorded 17 out of the 40 total kills. 
  • Allen finished the night with 29 assists. 
  • Both Thornton and freshman libero Audra Fontes (Fresno, CA) collected 10 digs each.

The Chargers roll right back into action tomorrow, Thursday, September 23, 2021, at 7 PM against Northern Vermont University -Johnson at home in Dan and Kathleen Hogan Sports Center.
