WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - March 7, 2020 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team split a doubleheader with Becker to begin a busy spring trip at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Colby-Sawyer won game one 10-4, while Becker took game two 8-2.
The Chargers are now 1-2 on the season and will play two games against Juniata on Sunday in Auburndale. Becker goes to 2-4.
GAME 1 - Colby-Sawyer 10, Becker 4
The Hawks put up four runs in the first inning on four hits. Michael McMahon (Canton, Mass.), Ben Mazzone (Bristol, Conn.), Rob Pellerin (Gorham, Maine), and Corey Shea (West Boylston, Mass.) each plated a run on singles. Colby-Sawyer began a rally in the bottom of the inning and loaded the bases, but failed to score to keep the game at 4-0 after one.
The Chargers scored one in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch, and then pulled ahead in the bottom of the third when they plated five runs on five hits and one Becker error.
Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.),
Danny McCrystal (Londonderry, N.H.), and
Ben Brennan (Marblehead, Mass.) registered RBI in the inning.
Each team left three runners on base in the fourth inning, then Colby-Sawyer added to their lead in the fifth as they scored four runs on a two-run double from Choiniere, a hit-by-pitch, and a wild pitch.
Colby-Sawyer's
Derek Griffin (Lebanon, N.H.) earned his first win of the season in six innings pitched. He allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out six.
Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.) reached base four times for the Chargers, going 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and a stolen base.
McMahon finished game one with two hits and an RBI. Michael Martinez took the loss in 2.2 innings pitched. He allowed six runs (three unearned) on six hits.
GAME 2 - Becker 8, Colby-Sawyer 2
Becker received a complete game from freshman Jacob Asdot (Jacksonville, Fla.) to earn the split. He allowed two runs (one unearned) on four hits, and struck out six Chargers.
Becker's Kevin Santiago (New Bedford, Mass.) went 3-for-4 from the plate with one run, one RBI, and swiped two bases. McMahon had two doubles, scored two runs and had an RBI. Ross Audet (Swansea, Mass.) went 2-for-4 from the plate with a double.
Noah Rivera (New Bedford, Mass.) led the team with two RBI, as he doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the first to start the Hawks' scoring in game two.
McMahon and Mazzone had a double and a single, respectively, to add two more runs in the third, to extend the Hawks' lead to four.
Becker doubled their lead in the fifth inning, as they scored on an RBI single from Santiago, and a Charger fielding error.
Colby-Sawyer's two runs came in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from
Tim Unczur (Danvers, Mass.) and an RBI single from Liam Datres de Ia Blotier (Shelburne Falls, Mass.).
Ryan Buccini recorded his first collegiate knock with a double in the third inning.
Unczur took the loss on the mound in five innings pitched. He allowed eight runs (three unearned) on nine hits, and struck out six in his appearance.
