Baseball Drops NAC Opening DH at Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. - April 11, 2018 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team returned to action, after 19 days without a game, to play a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader at Castleton on Wednesday afternoon. The Spartans won both ends of the twin bill by scores of 7-3 and 7-1. 

Castleton improves to 12-9 overall and 6-2 in the NAC. The Chargers drop to 2-11 overall and 0-2 in conference action. Colby-Sawyer is slated to play at New England College on Friday for a NAC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.

GAME ONE - Castleton 7, Colby-Sawyer 3

Colby-Sawyer claimed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Dougie Avellino doubled to start the game and advanced to third on a fly out by Brendan Thurber, and the ensuing throw to third got away as Avellino crossed the plate to give the Chargers an early lead.

Castleton got on the board with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the second. Matt Braman had the big hit in the frame with a two-run single up the middle.

The Spartans added two more runs in the third inning on an RBI double from Steven Walsh and a sacrifice fly by Alex Borsari.

Davis Mikell gave the home team a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth with a a three-run home run.  

Colby-Sawyer's Brendan Thurber led off the seventh with a single and came around to score on a defensive miscue. Andrew Pratt scored Connor Henry on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 7-3, but that would be as close as the Chargers would get.

Braman paced the Spartans offensively with two hits and two RBI. Mikell went 1-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI behind his fourth home run of the season.

Cameron Goulet went the distance for Castleton and struck out 10 while allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits.

Ryan Glendye shouldered the loss on the mound for Colby-Sawyer, allowing seven runs on eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts over six innings. He did record his third complete game of the season, which is tied for 11th most in the country. 


GAME TWO - Castleton 7, Colby-Sawyer 1 

Mitchell Caron gave Castleton an early 1-0 lead in the home half of the first with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Matt Braman. The Spartans scored two more runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead. 

Colby-Sawyer scored in the top of the sixth on an RBI double to left field by Tim Unczur.

The Spartans added four runs in the bottom of the sixth to account for the 7-1 score. 

Andy Kenosh tossed six innings for Castleton, scattering seven hits and one earned run with two strikeouts. Mikell finished 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI to pace Castleton offensively.

Austin Butler and Connor Henry had two hits apiece for the Chargers. 

Chris Hood took the loss on the mound for Colby-Sawyer, allowing two earned runs on three hits with a walk over three innings. Andrew Carbone surrendered four unearned runs with three strikeouts over three innings of relief
