Women's Basketball Celebrates Senior Day with 65-50 Win over NEC

NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 10, 2018 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team celebrated senior day with a 65-50 win over New England College in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 18-5 overall and 13-3 in the NAC. The Chargers will play their final regular season home game on Thursday against Lyndon. New England College falls to 13-10 overall and 8-8 in conference play. The Pilgrims host Johnson on Thursday.

Prior to the opening tip, five Colby-Sawyer seniors were honored for their contributions and dedication to the women's basketball program. Those seniors are Alli Barrett (Kittery, Maine), Amanda Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.), Alex Danas (Middletown, Conn.), Morgan Fogg (Sanford, Maine), and Emmani Robinson (Newburgh, N.Y.).

Sophomore Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) led the Chargers with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Robinson recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) finished with 15 points, 10 assists and six steals.

NEC was led by sophomore Rene Hudson (Gallatin, Tenn.). She had a game best 22 points and added eight boards. Sophomore Daleia Boutwell (Dorchester, Mass.) tallied a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

The Pilgrims opened the game with a trey from Hudson, but Colby-Sawyer responded with a jumper from Robinson and five points from Hamilton to take a 7-3 lead four minutes into the quarter. The Chargers would hold their largest lead of the frame, 15-10, with 1:31 to play after a pair of free throws from freshman Joslin Wainwright (Plainfield, N.H.). NEC clawed back within one over the next minute, but a pair of freebies by Hamilton gave Colby-sawyer a 17-14 lead after one.

Colby-Sawyer also outscored NEC 17-14 in the second quarter to take a 34-28 lead at the half. The Chargers turned 11 NEC miscues into 11 points and held the Pilgrims to 31.3% from the floor. Robinson scored 12 of 16 points in the half, while Hamilton had 13. Hudson led NEC with 14 points.

NEC came back to tie the game, 38-38 three minutes into the third, when Jada Black (Concord, N.C.) converted a jumper in the paint. The Chargers then built a comfortable lead, which ballooned to nine after a Calvo jumper with less than a minute to play. Boutwell made a pair of free throws in the final seconds for NEC, but Colby-Sawyer held a 51-44 lead after three.

Colby-Sawyer increased its lead to double-digits midway through the fourth and never looked back. The Charger defense held NEC to only two made field goals in the fourth to go on for the 65-50 victory.

The Chargers had a 25-4 advantage in points off turnovers. NEC won the battle of the boards 46-38.
