Women's Basketball Uses Strong First Quarter to Get Past Thomas, 75-62

WATERVILLE, Maine - January 26, 2018 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team outscored Thomas College 26-9 in the first quarter and never looked back en route to Friday night's 75-62 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory. 

Colby-Sawyer improves to 14-4 overall and 9-2 in the NAC. The team will stay in Maine to play at UMaine-Farmington tomorrow at 1 p.m. Thomas drops to 8-10 overall and 5-6 in conference play. The Terriers will host New England College on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Colby-Sawyer senior Emmani Robinson (Newburgh, N.Y.) recorded her fourth-straight double-double and sixth overall with game-highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds. She was 9-of-12 from the floor and added five steals in 40 minutes of action. Sophomore Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) and senior Amanda Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) also reached double digits in scoring with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) added nine points, nine assists and five rebounds. 

Thomas was led by Jordan Turner's (Casco, Maine) 16 points and six rebounds. Sammie Griffin was the only other Terrier to score double figures with 10 points. 

The Chargers offense caught fire in the first frame as they cruised out to a 26-9 lead on 11-of-16 shooting from the floor. Robinson netted nine points to lead Colby-Sawyer along with six points on a pair of threes from Alli Barnett (Kittery, Maine). The Thomas offense struggled to find a rhythm as they turned the ball over seven times.

The Terriers kept pace with the Chargers throughout the second quarter behind seven points from Turner. Hamilton finished the half with seven points and seven assists for a 46-30 advantage at the break.

Thomas cut its 16-point deficit in half in the third as the Terriers found themselves within eight going into the final frame. Molly Carroll (Southwest Harbor, Maine) and Malorie Weaver (Palermo, Maine) combined for 11 points and helped outscore the Chargers 22-14 in the quarter. 

Colby-Sawyer gained control back throughout the fourth quarter as they re-extended their lead to finish at 75-62.

Colby-Sawyer shot 49.2% from the floor, while Thomas shot 41.7%. Each team made just four three-pointers, but Colby-Sawyer was more efficient thanks to 44.4% to Thomas' 23.5%. The Chargers held a slight edge on the glass 37-32.
