Strong Defense Lifts Men's Basketball Past Johnson, 68-44

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 23, 2018 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team held Johnson State College to 29% shooting in Tuesday's 68-44 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory.  

Colby-Sawyer improves to 11-5 overall and 8-2 in the NAC. The Chargers will travel to Maine this weekend for NAC games at Thomas and UMaine-Farmington. Johnson drops to 6-10 overall and 3-7 in conference play. The Badgers will host Lyndon State on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Colby-Sawyer sophomore Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) led all players with 20 points and added 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Sophomore Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) was second on the team with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Junior Jourdain Bell (Manchester, N.H.) added 15 points and four steals. Freshman Nate Trevino (Boerne, Texas) grabbed 10 rebounds and dished six assists.

Johnson was led by freshman Robert Dubose Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa.) who scored 10 points in 21 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Alexander Vetere (Craftsbury, Vt.) chipped in nine points, while junior Donnell Shaw (Washington, D.C.) collected a game best 12 rebounds.

The Chargers were engaged defensively from the opening tip, which resulted in Johnson scoring 29 points less than its season scoring average of 73.3. Colby-Sawyer also held the Badgers' starting lineup to 22 points.

The game began with each team trading the first four baskets resulting in the only two ties of the contest. Colby-Sawyer slowly pulled away despite begin outrebounded 23-19 in the half. Midway through the frame, an Erik Olson (Dracut, Mass.) gave Colby-Sawyer its largest lead of the half at 19-9. Johnson used a 9-2 run capped by a Vetere trey to pull within three points with 7:02 left. The Chargers pushed their lead back to nine at the end of the half when Austin Boudreau (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) nailed a three in the final seconds to give Colby-Sawyer a 33-24 lead at the break.

After Dana Bean opened the second half with a layup to give the Chargers a double-digit lead, the Chargers did not relinquish that advantage for the remainder of the game. Colby-Sawyer shot 46.7% in the half, while Johnson made 27.6% of its attempts. The Chargers also turned the rebounding edge in their favor to finish the game with a 45-37 advantage.
