Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Chargers Edge Maine Maritime with Late Free Throws Again, 52-50

CASTINE, Maine - January 13, 2018 - In similar fashion to last night's win over Husson, the Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team hit a pair of free throws with less than three seconds left in the game to edge Maine Maritime, 52-50, in North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer has won five-straight to improve to 10-3 overall and 6-1 in the NAC. The Chargers will host non-conference foe Plymouth State on Monday before returning to NAC action on Tuesday at home against Green Mountain. Maine Maritime drops to 7-6 overall and 3-4 in the NAC. The Mariners will travel to Vermont for a pair of conference games next weekend.

Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) led the Chargers with 13 points on 4-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Sophomore Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) filled the stat sheet with 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Senior Emmani Robinson (Newburgh, N.Y.) added 11 points and eight rebounds. Senior Amanda Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) rounded out the double-digit scorers for Colby-Sawyer with 10 points.

Maine Maritime was led by Alayne Felix. She had 13 points and seven rebounds. Chloe Smedley added 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

The Chargers held a 45-41 lead midway through the fourth quarter after an Amanda Calvo layup. Chloe Smedley responded with two consecutive buckets to tie the game for the Mariners. After some free throws by each team, the game was tied once again at 48-48 with less than a minute to play. Colby-Sawyer's Lexie Hamilton was then fouled and converted both free throw attempts to give the Chargers a two-point advantage. On the ensuing possession, the Mariners ran the shot clock all the way down and received a layup from Alayne Felix as the buzzer sounded to tie the game. Colby-Sawyer then called timeout to advance the ball with just three second showing on the game clock. On the inbounds play, Tianna Sugars was fouled taking a shot. She made the first free throw but missed the second. Luckily for the Chargers, Emmani Robinson came down with the loose ball and was also fouled. She made one of two to give Colby-Sawyer a 52-50 lead with .2 seconds on the clock. The Chargers then stole the Maine Maritime inbounds play to secure the victory.

The Chargers jumped out to a four-point lead midway through the first quarter, but the Mariners fought back and closed out the first 10 minutes on a five-point run to take a 13-8 lead into the second quarter.

The Mariners took a six-point lead in the second quarter following a Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) 3-pointer. The two teams exchanged scores until the Chargers took a two-point lead (20-18) at 5:45 on a three from Amanda Calvo. A layup from Amanda Holewiak (Somerset, Mass.) tied the game at 20-20 but the Chargers took a 26-24 lead into halftime.

The Mariners tied the game up twice early in the third quarter but the Chargers began to build a lead, and led by as much as seven twice. The Chargers won the quarter 16-14 and took a 42-38 lead into the final frame.
