Women's Basketball Earns 62-53 Win at Lyndon

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. - December 9, 2017 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team earned a 62-53 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory at Lyndon on Saturday afternoon.

The Chargers wrapped up the first semester with a 5-2 overall record and a 2-1 mark in the NAC. The team will resume their season at Salem State on January 2. Lyndon ends the semester at 5-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Hornets return to the court on January 3 at Plymouth State.

Sophomore Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) led five Colby-Sawyer players in double figures with 15 points. She added nine rebounds and a pair of blocks. Senior Amanda Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) scored 12 points, while freshman Mackenzie Buzzell (Lovell, Maine) added 11 points off the bench. Sophomore Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) recorded a double-double of 10 points and 11 assists. Senior Emmani Robinson (Newburgh, N.Y.) tallied 10 points, eight rebounds and six steals.

Lyndon was led by Mikayla Hodge's 22 points and 16 rebounds. Alissa Mitchell contributed six points and nine rebounds.

The Hornets scored the first two buckets of the game to hold their largest lead of the game. Colby-Sawyer broke through with a Sugars layup four minutes into the first quarter and added three more baskets to take an 8-4 lead. The home team regained the advantage with a pair of Hodge free throws with 36 seconds left at 11-10, but Colby-Sawyer took a 13-11 lead into the second after a Hamilton trey.

The second quarter was back and forth with each team holding multiple leads but neither could create separation. The entire frame was played within three points and that's where the half would end after an Emmani Robinson layup sent the Chargers into the break ahead 30-27.

Colby-Sawyer turned up the defense in the third quarter and allowed just two made baskets by Lyndon to win the quarter 15-6 and take a 45-33 lead.

Lyndon attempted a comeback in the fourth and outscored the Chargers 20-17, but the strong third quarter by Colby-Sawyer was the difference.

Despite being outrebounded by Lyndon 44-35, the Chargers held a 10-7 edge in second chance points.
