SALEM, Mass. - January 2, 2018 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team returned to action after nearly a month off and was defeated by Salem State, 64-46, in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening.
The Chargers drop to 5-3 overall and will resume North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action this weekend with home games against UMaine-Farmington on Friday and Thomas on Saturday. Salem State improves to 4-8.
Senior
Amanda Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) led the Chargers with 10 points. Freshman
Jordyn Enos (Salinas, Calif.) chipped in seven points in 12 minutes off the bench. Sophomore
Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) and senior
Emmani Robinson (Newburgh, N.Y.) each grabbed nine rebounds.
Kia Fernandes led all players with a double-double of 29 points and 16 rebounds. Norma Waggett added 11 points, while Gianna Moschella also reached double digits with 10 points.
The Vikings built a 17-7 lead after the first quarter and took a 29-15 advantage into halftime. Fernandez had 11 of the Vikings first 17 points as she scored 19 points before halftime. A layup by Enos cut the deficit to six points for Colby-Sawyer at 19-13 with six minutes left in the second quarter before the Vikings ended on a 10-2 run, taking a 29-15 lead into halftime.
The home team opened the third with a 9-2 spurt to increase the advantage to 38-17 and never looked back. The Vikings entered the fourth quarter in front 48-29 and went on for the 64-46 victory.
The Vikings shot 39.7% (23-58) from the floor and made 14-of-21 (66.7%) free throw attempts, while Colby-Sawyer shot just 24.6% (16-65) from the field and converted 10-of-23 (43.5%) from the free throw line.
