DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - December 30, 2017 - The Norwich University men's basketball team shot 56.5% from beyond the arc to defeat Colby-Sawyer, 83-64, in the final game of the 2017 Land of Magic Classic held at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Norwich improves to 2-7, while the Chargers drop to 6-3. Colby-Sawyer will return to frigid New Hampshire to host a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games against UMaine-Farmington and Thomas on January 5-6.
The Cadets shot 53.2% overall and an impressive 56.5% from beyond the arc, including a 10-for-12 performance in the second half. Norwich made 13 three-pointers and 12 two-point buckets in the game.
Freshman Jesse Davis (Woodinville, Wash.) once again led the team offensively with 25 points, while Joe Bertrand had a complete game with 19 points on 6-8 (75%) shooting, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Daniel Haimes (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) provided a spark off the bench with 10 points on 2-3 (66%) shooting from 3-point land and 4-4 shooting from the free throw line.
Colby-Sawyer received a team best 15 points from sophomore
Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.). Freshman
Austin Boudreau (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) went 4-of-6 from deep to finish with 14 points, while sophomore
Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) chipped in 13 points. Freshman
Erik Olson (Dracut, Mass.) was the fourth Charger to reach double digits with 11 points.
The Cadets opened the game up with a 10-2 run and did not relinquish the lead. The Chargers hung close in the first frame despite shooting 34.4% from the floor. Norwich held just a 32-26 lead at the break.
Colby-Sawyer cut the deficit to three points after a Coffey trey began the second half, but responded with a seven-point spurt to take a 39-29 lead. The Chargers then trailed by 19 with 13:18 left to play, 54-35, but never gave up. Colby-Sawyer went on a 16-3 run capped by five-straight points from Boudreau to cut the lead to six points.
Norwich never let the Chargers get any closer as the team continued to convert on their three-point attempts to pull away for the victory.
