NEW LONDON, N.H. – December 1, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team was edged by Middlebury, 66-59, in overtime at the David L. Coffin Fieldhouse Friday evening.
Middlebury improves to 6-0 and is back in action on Tuesday when they will host Plattsburgh at 5:30 p.m. The Panthers are coached by former Colby-Sawyer women's basketball standout and 2014 Colby-Sawyer Hall of Fame inductee KJ Krasco '05. Colby-Sawyer suffers its first loss of the season to drop to 3-1. The Chargers will begin North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play tomorrow at Green Mountain with a 1 p.m. tip.
Middlebury held a 53-50 lead with 3:11 left to play in regulation, but layups from Colby-Sawyer's
Emmani Robinson (Newburgh, N.Y.) and
Mackenzie Buzzell (Lovell, Maine) sandwiched around a Colleen Caveney (Andover, Mass.) free throw tied the score at 54-54 with 1:26 to play. Middlebury took a two-point lead (56-54) seconds later after a layup from Maya Davis (Milton, Mass.).
The Panthers held possession as the clock went under 20 seconds, but were forced to put up a three-point attempt at the end of the shot clock. The shot bounced off the rim to Colby-Sawyer's
Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) to give the home team a chance in the final seconds. Sugars then was involved in the offense as she curled off a screen and hit a close range jump shot off the glass to tie score with .9 seconds showing on the clock. After timeouts by each team, Middlebury advanced the ball and inbounded, but the last second shot attempt was blocked by Sugars to send the game into overtime.
The Panthers made just 3-of-13 three-point attempts through four quarters, but that did not deter the Panthers' confidence going into overtime who then made 2-of-4 in the extra frame.
Middlebury received a trey from Betsy Knox (Bethesda, Md.) on the opening possession of overtime, which was answered by Buzzell three on the ensuing Chargers possession. After a Middlebury free throw gave the visitors a 60-59 lead, Alex Huffman (Lynn, Mass.) converted the Panthers' second-straight three-point attempt to make the cushion 63-59. The visitors added three more points in the final 32 seconds to come away with the 66-59 overtime victory.
Davis led Middlebury with a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds. Knox finished with 13 points. Sarah Kaufman (Boulder, Colo.) and Huffman each added 10 points, while Huffman also grabbed seven rebounds.
Colby-Sawyer was led by
Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.). She finished with a game best 20 points and six assists before fouling out with just over a minute to play in the fourth. Sugars recorded a double-double of 16 points and 11 boards to go along with four blocks. Buzzell was the third Charger to reach double figures with 12 points off the bench.
