JOHNSON, Vt. – January 3, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team received a career best double-double of 24 points and 18 rebounds from freshman
Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.), but Johnson State escaped with an 85-80 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) overtime victory on Tuesday evening.
Colby-Sawyer drops to 4-7 overall and 2-3 in the NAC. The Chargers will step out of conference on Thursday for a 7 p.m. game at Regis. Johnson State improves to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in conference action. The Badgers will host UMaine-Farmington on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Freshman
Dana Bean hit a layup to give the Chargers an 80-79 lead with 2:12 left in overtime, but Kawaun Chavis scored five of the final six Johnson State points to lift the Badgers to an 85-80 victory.
Bean went 9-for-13 from the floor and made 6-of-8 free throw attempts to lead all players with 24 points. He came within one rebound of tying the single game record of 19 with his 18 boards tonight.
Nate Cook finished with nine points and nine rebounds, while
Taylor Grande,
Jourdain Bell and
Patrick Coffey had 12 points apiece.
Marqwon Wynn led four Badgers in double figures with 19 points. He added five steals. Chavis was 8-of-10 from the free throw line and finished with 17 points.
Each team struggled to find a rhythm on the offensive end early in the first half, which included a three minute stretch with neither team scoring. Midway through the frame, the Badgers held a 13-9 advantage before Colby-Sawyer would gain momentum. A
Dana Bean layup began a 10-0 run that was capped by an
Evyn Nolette three-pointer to give the Chargers a 19-13 lead with seven minutes to play.
Colby-Sawyer pushed its lead to 16 after a
Taylor Grande trey with 1:29 remaining. Johnson State's Kawaun Chavis scored the next five points to pull the Badgers within 11, but Colby-Sawyer's
Milani Hicks ended the half with a layup and a pair of free throws to send the visitors to the locker room in front 39-24.
Bean led all players in the half with 10 points to go with seven rebounds. The Chargers were just 4-of-19 from beyond the arc in the first, but made all seven free throw attempts. Colby-Sawyer controlled the boards 33-16 and held the Badgers to 25.8% shooting.
Johnson State flipped the script in the second half with efficient shooting, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc. Trailing 62-48 with 8:36 to play, the Badgers used an 18-4 run to erase the deficit with 3:46 remaining. Colby-Sawyer took a 73-70 lead after a pair of free throws by
Taylor Grande, but Marqwon Wynn hit the game-tying three-pointer with two seconds left to send the contest to overtime.
Colby-Sawyer outrebounded Johnson State 58-37.
