NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 13, 2016 – Colby-Sawyer senior
Peter Donato (Portland, Maine) continued his impressive play this week with 32 points in Saturday's 92-83 victory over Thomas College in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action.
Colby-Sawyer wins its fourth straight game to improve to 16-6 overall and 12-4 in the NAC. The Chargers will play at New England College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Thomas drops to 12-11 overall and 8-8 in the NAC. The Terriers travel to Husson on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
Donato went 14-for-24 from the field to finish with his fifth 30-point effort of the season. Donato also had two blocked shots to give him 109 career swats and tie him for second all-time with Jon Chaloux '10. He ends the week with 90 points in three games. Freshman
Milani Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) earned a double-double with 11 points and a game best 12 rebounds. Senior
Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.) added 17 points.
Thomas was led by senior Levi Barnes (Skowhegan, Maine). He scored 22 points on 7-of-14 from the floor and made all seven free throw attempts. Senior Adam Carlsen (Rockport, Maine) made his first five attempts from beyond the arc to finish with 15 points, while junior Tyheem Simon (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) added 12 points.
The game was scoreless after three minutes of action before a Mike Akanji (Lincoln, R.I.) gave Thomas a 3-0 lead. The Chargers wouldn't record a field goal until the 14:54 mark on a Donato layup to take a 4-3 lead. Over the next several minutes, the Chargers began to widen the lead to as much as 15 with 4:33 left to play in the first. The Terriers came within four at the half after ending the frame on a 7-0 run, including four straight points from Barnes.
The second half would remain in favor of the home team for the first several minutes until the Terrier eventually tied the game at 50-50 with 12:21 to play. Thomas took its first lead since early in the first half after Adam Carlsen capped an 11-0 run to put the visitors in front 53-50. A Levi Barnes trey pushed the Thomas lead to 10 with less than seven minutes to play.
Peter Donato brought Colby-Sawyer back to even with eight points in a four minute span to tie the game 73-73 with 2:30 left. The Chargers defense would hold Thomas scoreless for the remainder of the game and the offense made 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to secure the 82-73 win.
Thomas won the battle on the boards 41-35, but committed 26 turnovers which turned into 32 Colby-Sawyer points.
