Men's Basketball Edged by Immaculata, 86-82

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - December 30, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team was edged by Immaculata, 86-82, in the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament consolation game.

Today's game was the first meeting between the two teams. 

Colby-Sawyer drops to 4-6 and will return to North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. road game at Johnson State. Immaculata improves to 4-6 and also resumes conference action on Tuesday with a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) contest at Rosemont with an 8 p.m. tip.

The Chargers were led by sophomore Jourdain Bell's 23 points. Sophomore Nate Cook poured in a career best 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting (4-of-6 from beyond the arc). He added eight rebounds and a pair of blocks. Freshman Dana Bean just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine boards. Freshman Patrick Coffey finished with 15 points off the bench. 

Eric Pittman led the Mighty Macs with 19 points off the bench. Roy Ferrell Jr. collected a double-double of 16 points and a game best 12 rebounds. Mike Piekarski was 6-of-11 from the floor for 15 points, while Will Chapman added 13 points. 

Colby-Sawyer began the first half on an 11-3 run capped by a three-point play from Bell. A couple of minutes later, the Chargers lead grew to 12 at 18-6, but Immaculata rattled off eight straight points to cut the deficit to 18-14 with 12:32 left in the half. Dana Bean pushed the advantage back to 10 after a three-point play at the midway point of the stanza. With less than five minutes to go, the Mighty Macs pulled within four after a 9-2 spurt to trail 35-31. The teams then traded baskets down the stretch before Taylor Grande hit a trey with 12 seconds left to send Colby-Sawyer into the half with a 45-40 lead. Coffey had nine points for the Chargers in the first 20 minutes. 

The first few minutes of the second half were back and forth featuring multiple ties until Immaculata took its first lead at 11:18 since the score was 3-2. The Mighty Macs led 60-58 after a Piekarski layup, but a Milani Hicks tied the game on the next possession. Immaculata regained the lead on an Eric Pittman trey and held a slim advantage for the next eight minutes when a Bell three-pointer knotted the game at 79-79 with 2:27 left to play. The Chargers took the lead on a Taylor Grande free throw at 1:47, but the Mighty Macs received two straight made jumpers from Piekarski to take an 83-80 lead. A pair of Coffey free throws pulled Colby-Sawyer within a point with 17 seconds to play, but on the ensuing possession Jordan Ambrose converted a three-point play to give Immaculata the 86-82 victory.   

Each team corralled 38 rebounds and shot well from the free throw line. Immaculata converted 87% (20-23), while Colby-Sawyer made 80% (24-30).
